The author was recognised for her innovative body of work, in which classical tradition interacts with contemporary forms of writing. The prize is worth 12 million Swedish kronor, or around 1.2 million dollars.

Briefly about the main points

Carson was awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature.

The Academy recognised her engagement with the classical tradition.

The author works in the fields of poetry, prose, drama and translation.

Her best-known books include *Autobiography of Red* and *Nox*.

The awards will be presented on 10 December in Stockholm.

An award for literature that transcends genre boundaries

The Swedish Academy described the body of work Carson She is both bold and resourceful: she engages in a creative dialogue with the classical heritage and explores new forms of literary expression. The writer combines poetry, essays, drama, prose and translations of ancient texts.

She draws on ancient Greek myths and historical narratives to explore contemporary human experiences. Chair of the Nobel Committee for Literature Anders Ulsson He described her work as a fusion of philological analysis of language and poetic exploration of new meanings. In his view, her works combine various artistic forms and transcend conventional genre boundaries.

From classical languages to experimental prose and poetry

Carson was born in 1950 in Toronto; she studied ancient literature and classical languages, and later taught at universities in North America. She gained international recognition for her experimental literature, in which poetic language is combined with philosophy, history and personal experience.

The verse novel *Autobiography of Red*, published in 1998, reinterprets the myth of Geryon as a contemporary tale of coming of age, love and self-discovery. In her 1986 book *Eros the Bittersweet*, the author explores love and desire through the lens of ancient Greek literature.

«The Beauty of the Husband» (2001) won an award T. S. Eliot, whilst her 2010 experimental book *Nox* is dedicated to the memory of her late brother. Carson has also translated Sappho, Sophocles and Euripides, offering a contemporary interpretation of these ancient authors.

Reactions from Iceland and previous literary honours

Carson was in Iceland when the result was announced. Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy Ingrid Karlberg She said that during a telephone conversation, the writer had mentioned that she was listening to the wind. The news came as a surprise to her, but she was very happy.

The author was granted Icelandic citizenship in 2022, along with her husband Robert Curry. Among her previous international honours is the Princess of Asturias Award for Literature, which she won in 2020.

The presentation of the medal and certificate is scheduled for December

Official award ceremony Nobel Prizes It will take place on 10 December in Stockholm, on the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
