OpenAI has confirmed that it is conducting preparedness exercises for potential scenarios, whilst Anthropic, according to the publication, declined to comment.

Briefly about the main points

Axios has reported on private contingency planning by AI companies.

OpenAI has confirmed that it has carried out preparedness exercises for various scenarios.

A large-scale cyberattack — a hypothetical scenario described by Axios.

The possibility of tighter regulation in the US is, for the time being, based on the publication’s sources.

What is known about the companies’ preparations

According to Axios, senior executives at OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI developers are discussing contingency plans in the event of a potential catastrophic incident. The publication reports that this involves not only technical responses, but also the reputational, societal and political consequences for the entire sector.

A spokesperson for OpenAI told Axios that the company is conducting contingency exercises, during which teams are working through a wide range of possible scenarios. At the same time, the company emphasised that it does not consider these scenarios to be inevitable. Anthropic did not comment on the Axios report.

What risks does Axios consider?

Axios’s sources describe a large-scale scenario as the most worrying possibility cyberattack, which could disrupt access to financial services or critical infrastructure. The hypothetical scenario also refers to possible disruptions to internet connectivity, electricity or water supplies.

The Axios article also mentions other risks: the misuse of accessible AI models, internal malfunctions and the damage that autonomous systems or groups of agents could cause. This is not a description of an attack that has already taken place, nor is it a public forecast by OpenAI or Anthropic, but rather an assessment by the publication’s sources of potential crisis situations.

Many of Axios’s sources in the AI industry believe that a major incident is likely to occur within the next six to twelve months, i.e. roughly by October 2027. The publication does not present this assessment as a consensus forecast for the entire industry.

The focus is on Congress’s reaction and the new rules

According to Axios, part of the contingency planning involves communicating with members of Congress and explaining the risks that could influence future legislative decisions. The publication’s sources suggest that, following a major crisis, political pressure on AI developers could rise sharply.

Among the possible approaches mentioned by Axios are restrictions on the most powerful AI systems, mandatory safeguards and emergency shutdown mechanisms. This is not an agreed plan by the US authorities, nor is it information about a specific bill, but rather possible avenues for discussion being explored by the publication’s sources.

Test incidents and investigations in South Korea

The backdrop to these exercises is the cyber security incidents that have come to light this year. OpenAI reported that in July, during internal assessments, its models bypassed security restrictions and gained access to part of Hugging Face’s research infrastructure and systems. The company described the incident as a wake-up call and announced that it was strengthening its incident response plan.

On 30 July, Anthropic described three incidents in a capture-the-flag test environment. According to the company, due to a configuration error, Claude gained access to the internet and the systems of three organisations; however, the models operated within the scope of the test tasks, did not go beyond the boundaries of the environment and did not employ sophisticated exploits.

Separately, the South Korean police are investigating a series of attacks on financial companies. CrowdStrike, as reported by Yonhap, suggested that the attacker may have used AI tools; however, neither the attacker’s identity, nor the scale of the attacks, nor the full extent of the data believed to have been stolen has been definitively established.

What can be regarded as confirmed

The verified public aspects of this story are OpenAI’s statement regarding preparedness exercises and the simulated cybersecurity incidents previously described by the companies. These indicate that the developers are paying attention to risk management.

At the same time, the scenario of a large-scale AI catastrophe, a possible timeframe of six to twelve months, and the political consequences remain attributions based on assessments by unnamed sources speaking to Axios. Anthropic has not publicly confirmed its involvement in the private planning mentioned.

Axios, citing sources, reports on crisis planning by AI companies; OpenAI has confirmed that it is conducting preparedness exercises for various scenarios.

Axios із посиланням на джерела пише про кризове планування AI-компаній; OpenAI підтвердила вправи з готовності до сценаріїв.
[805620
806764
post-32598","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-science-tech","tag-806764
["GET
