The American biotechnology company Life Biosciences has reported that the experimental gene therapy ER-100 improved certain aspects of vision in two out of three patients with glaucoma. The research is based on partial cellular reprogramming technology, which aims to restore the functions of damaged cells. Well-known investors in the longevity sector include Jeff Bezos, Peter Thiel, Sam Altman and Yuri Milner. However, scientists emphasise that these initial results do not yet prove it is possible to halt human ageing or restore the body to a youthful state.

Briefly about the main points

Cell rejuvenation technology has been tested on humans in the US.

Three patients with glaucoma took part in the study.

The therapy involves the genetic reprogramming of cells.

Bezos, Thiel and Altman are investing in longevity technologies.

Cell rejuvenation has been tested on humans for the first time in the US

An American company Life Biosciences On 8 October 2026, the company presented preliminary results from the first phase of the clinical trial of the experimental therapy ER-100. It is being developed to treat optic nerve disorders, in particular open-angle glaucoma, which can cause irreversible vision loss.

Three patients took part in the first phase. Each was given an injection of the experimental drug directly into the eye, after which they took doxycycline daily for eight weeks. In this protocol, the antibiotic is used to activate genetic factors that are intended to alter the state of the cells.

In 56 days’ time The researchers observed signs of an improvement in visual field in two participants. In each case, at least 28% verified points demonstrated an increase in light sensitivity of more than four decibels.

According to the company, the drug was well tolerated by all three patients. No serious adverse reactions related to the treatment were recorded during the first eight weeks. An independent safety monitoring committee recommended proceeding to a higher-dose trial.

However, this is only the first phase of a study involving three people. These results are not sufficient to confirm the treatment’s effectiveness or to prove that the tissues have actually been rejuvenated.

How does the technology that is supposed to restore youthfulness to cells work?

Partial epigenetic reprogramming forms the basis of this experimental treatment. The method aims to alter gene activity in cells without altering the DNA sequence itself.

As cells age, they gradually accumulate changes in their gene regulation mechanisms, which can affect their ability to function normally and regenerate. Researchers are attempting to partially restore these mechanisms to a state typical of younger cells.

The ER-100 therapy utilises three reprogramming factors — OCT4, SOX2 and KLF4. These belong to the so-called Yamanaka factors, the discovery of which was one of the most significant achievements in modern cell biology.

Unlike complete reprogramming, which can transform mature cells into stem cells, the partial approach is designed to preserve their specialisation. It is precisely this that should help to reduce the risk of undesirable changes, although the long-term safety of the technology still needs to be investigated.

Previous animal experiments have demonstrated that it is possible to influence certain age-related changes. However, results from mice and other laboratory models do not guarantee a similar effect in humans.

Bezos, Thiel and Altman are investing hundreds of millions in life extension

Interest in longevity technologies has long since extended beyond the confines of academic laboratories. In Silicon Valley, a whole industry of biotechnology start-ups has emerged, researching ways to regenerate cells, treat age-related diseases and extend healthy life expectancy.

One of the best-known projects is Altos Labs, which is backed by the founder of Amazon Jeff Bezos. The company began operations with funding of approximately $3 billion and focused on research into cell reprogramming.

CEO of OpenAI Sam Altman invested $180 million in Retro Biosciences. The start-up aims to develop technologies capable of extending a person’s healthy lifespan by approximately ten years.

The Founders Fund, an investment fund co-founded by Peter Thiel, also supports companies in the field of longevity. In particular, he led a funding round for New Limit worth $435 million. The company is working on reprogramming liver cells and plans to move into clinical trials in 2027.

Who is investing in longevity technologies?

Investor

A company or a project

Main focus

Jeff Bezos

Altos Labs

Cell reprogramming

Sam Altman

Retro Biosciences

Treatments for age-related conditions

Peter Thiel through Founders Fund

New Limit

Epigenetic rejuvenation of cells

Yuri Milner

Investments in biotechnology for longevity

Research into ageing

Companies adopt various approaches to promoting healthy living. These investments do not imply that all entrepreneurs have provided direct funding to Life Biosciences.

Can technology really restore lost sight?

Despite the encouraging results, ophthalmologists are urging caution when assessing the new treatment. An improvement in visual field parameters does not necessarily mean that the damaged nerve cells have fully recovered.

An American ophthalmologist James Tsai A doctor from the Mount Sinai healthcare system, who was not involved in the trial, noted that the experimental drug may have improved the function of the remaining healthy cells or the transmission of electrical signals, rather than creating new nerve tissue.

Furthermore, the study currently involves an extremely small number of people, has no control group, and the follow-up period is only eight weeks. To make a reliable assessment, larger-scale trials, replication of the results and long-term safety monitoring are required.

That is precisely why this new treatment cannot yet be described as a proven method of restoring sight.

Is it possible to achieve biological rejuvenation of the entire body?

If the effectiveness of partial cellular reprogramming is confirmed in humans, the technology could potentially open up new avenues for treating age-related diseases. Researchers are interested in its potential application not only in ophthalmology, but also for restoring the functions of the liver, muscles, joints and the nervous system.

However, there is a vast scientific gulf between treating a single organ and rejuvenating the entire human body. It remains to be established how safe it is to activate reprogramming factors in different tissues, whether the effect will be sustained over the years, and whether such intervention will increase the risk of uncontrolled cell growth.

As of October 2026, there is no clinically proven technology that can make a person biologically immortal. However, the first trials of cellular reprogramming demonstrate that research into ageing is gradually moving from laboratory experiments to clinical medicine.

For science, this could mark the beginning of a new approach to treating age-related conditions. Whether it can be developed into an effective and accessible treatment remains to be seen in the next stages of research.

Технологія клітинного
