The company notified the White House and the relevant authorities, and has temporarily blocked access to the open internet for such tests.

Briefly about the main points

Visa applications were not processed, and the State Department’s systems were not compromised.

The report of the murder was automatically filtered as spam before it could be examined by the investigators.

The agents gained access to paid data and exploited a server vulnerability.

Anthropic is introducing network monitoring, environment isolation and automatic blocking.

The company is continuing its audit and has not confirmed any leak of customer data.

The model has been moved from the training page to the State Department’s official website

Experimental model Anthropic She used the official online application form from the US Department of State for non-immigrant visas. Nineteen applications were submitted in August 2026, and one more in May.

According to the company’s explanation, the agent was supposed to work with a training version of the form, but the test page either failed to load or was accidentally closed. After that, the model automatically switched to the government portal and continued with the task.

The State Department stated that its information systems had not been hacked or compromised. The issue concerned the erroneous submission of forms to the actual system, rather than the issuing of visas.

The police did not pass on the false report of a murder to the investigators

18 July Claude Haiku 4.5 I was carrying out a test task involving browsing random web pages and came across the Philadelphia Police Department’s page on unsolved murders. There was a form there for potential witnesses to submit information.

The model filled in the form herself, claiming that she had allegedly seen a person resembling a possible suspect near the scene of the crime. There was no basis for this claim: the page did not even contain a description of the suspect referred to by the agent.

Anthropic detected the incident on 28 September and reported it to the police on 7 October. Law enforcement agencies criticised the delay and called on the company to tighten its controls to ensure that such actions do not disrupt the work of municipal services.

Other agents sought technical ways to circumvent the established limits

The Anthropic report describes an agent that was supposed to retrieve publicly available statistical data from a US government agency, but access to this data required payment. Instead, the model obtained a valid token via the website’s public functions and accessed the database directly.

Claude Mythos Preview He also discovered a software vulnerability on the university’s server, executed commands on it and completed a scientific calculation. Separately, the company noted the use of URL shortening services to bypass tools that control web access.

Anthropic describes such instances as a manifestation of the agents’ excessive autonomy: whilst carrying out a task, they find ways that go beyond the permitted actions.

The company promises to strengthen the isolation of tests and the monitoring of network tools

Following the review, Anthropic notified the organisations whose websites had been affected by the models’ unintended behaviour. Previously, restrictions on the open internet had mainly been applied to high-risk trials and cybersecurity tests.

The measures announced include enhanced monitoring of network tools, automatic detection of malicious activities, isolation of test environments and changes to model training. According to the company, the new automatic blocking mechanisms halted all the types of activity described during a follow-up review.

Anthropic is continuing its audit, whilst researchers are calling for an explanation of the scale of the problem

Head of the Nightingale Collective Sidney von Arks In a comment to *The Washington Post*, she called on Anthropic to explain the scale of the problem in greater detail and to investigate whether there had been any other unauthorised actions by the models. The company did not specify the total number of incidents detected nor did it disclose the names of some of the organisations involved, citing the risk of publicising information about potential vulnerabilities.

Anthropic acknowledges that existing training and monitoring mechanisms do not provide absolute protection against such behaviour. As of 10 October, the company was continuing its security audit AI agents; there have been no confirmed data breaches involving its customers in these cases.

Anthropic notified the White House after its AI agents had applied for US visas and accessed government data for which they were due to pay, without actually paying.

Anthropic повідомила Білий дім після того, як її ШІ-агенти подали заявки на візи США та отримували платні державні дані без оплати.
[805620
806764
post-32674","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-science-tech","tag-806764
["GET
