The operating arrangements will be determined on a case-by-case basis for each school, taking into account water and electricity supplies, technical capabilities and the security situation, the Kyiv City State Administration reported on 12 October, citing the Department of Education and Science.

Briefly about the main points

There will be no single decision on remote learning for all schools in the capital.

Face-to-face classes are possible provided that appropriate hygiene measures are in place.

During power cuts, establishments may use a backup power supply.

In low light, teachers may conduct oral lessons.

The school administration will provide updates on any changes to the timetable and format.

The decision will depend on the circumstances of the individual school

Face-to-face lessons will only be permitted where conditions allow pupils and staff to be present safely. If a school is unable to meet health and safety requirements due to water supply issues, it will operate remotely until the situation improves.

Schools, even within the same district, may operate in different ways. The decisive factors will be the school’s readiness, its technical capabilities, the availability of electricity and the current security situation.

How lessons will be organised during power cuts

Where technically feasible, schools will use generators, inverters and charging stations to keep operations running during power cuts.

If there is insufficient lighting for written work, teachers will be able to temporarily conduct lessons orally. If it is not possible to provide suitable conditions for the children, lessons will be moved online until such conditions are restored.

Premises belonging to other organisations may be used for classes

The practice of educational relocation continues in Kyiv: vacant premises in other schools and nurseries that meet the necessary criteria may be used for teaching purposes.

Provided the security situation is favourable, pupils will attend lessons on the premises of their schools. In the event of an air-raid alert, children and staff must proceed to a shelter.

Parents will be kept informed via the school’s communication channels

The administration of each school will inform families of any changes to the teaching format via their chosen communication channels. Parents are advised to check the online diary and keep an eye out for updates regarding the timetable and the organisation of lessons.

As at 09:39 on 12 October, «Kyivvodokanal»… announced that the water supply had been restored on both sides of the capital.
