During trading on 12 October, Brent futures approached $107 per barrel, with price rises exceeding 2% on some exchanges. At the same time, physical crude oil with actual delivery remains significantly more expensive than exchange-traded contracts. Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, attacks on tankers and risks to oil supplies continue to affect the global energy market.<\/p>\n<div class=\"news-summary-box\"><strong>Briefly about the main points\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Brent futures have approached $107 per barrel.<\/li>\n<li>The rise in prices is linked to the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.<\/li>\n<li>The energy truce between Ukraine and Russia announced by Trump has yet to have any confirmed terms of implementation.<\/li>\n<li>On the spot market, oil is significantly more expensive than futures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Brent crude oil prices are rising again following the attacks on Saudi Arabia<\/h2>\n<p>On Monday, 12 October, global oil prices resumed their rise following a morning dip caused by statements from the US President <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> about <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/world\/minerva-zen-russian-diesel-us-route\/\">supplies of Russian diesel<\/a> and a possible energy truce.<\/p>\n<p>At 11.24 GMT <strong>Brent futures rose by 1.2% to $106.19 per barrel<\/strong>. The agency later reported that the price had risen to approximately $106.80.<\/p>\n<p>One of the main factors was a new wave of attacks by Yemeni Houthis on Saudi Arabian territory.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, militants attacked King Khalid International Airport <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/world\/ataka-aeroport-er-riyada\/\">in Riyadh<\/a>. According to reports from international news agencies, the strikes resulted in casualties and significant disruption to air traffic. The Houthis also stated their intention to continue military operations against targets within the kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>The escalation of the conflict has heightened concerns amongst oil market participants regarding the security of the Middle East\u2019s energy and transport infrastructure.<\/p>\n<h2>Attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz are exacerbating the oil crisis<\/h2>\n<p>Further contributing to the rise in prices were new attacks on commercial vessels near the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p>The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has reported that <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/world\/ormuzka-protoka-tanker-750-tysyach-bareliv-vybukh\/\">damage to the tanker<\/a> whilst passing through the strait. Another vessel was attacked by a drone near the Omani port of Sohar.<\/p>\n<p>The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most important routes for the transport of oil from the Persian Gulf.<\/p>\n<p>Due to military operations and risks to shipping, carriers are forced to factor in higher costs for insurance, freight and the possible re-routing of vessels. SEB analysts note that the new attacks have undermined market confidence in the resumption of stable oil supplies from the Middle East.<\/p>\n<h2>Why is physical crude oil more expensive than Brent futures?<\/h2>\n<p>On the global oil market, there is a significant difference between the prices of exchange-traded futures and the cost of actual consignments of oil involving physical delivery.<\/p>\n<p>Brent futures reflect the price of contracts with specified terms and a set expiry date. By contrast, the cost of specific consignments may include regional surcharges, transport, insurance and other costs.<\/p>\n<p>According to the US Energy Information Administration, on 5 October the spot price of Brent on the European market stood at $125.51 per barrel.<\/p>\n<p>Chevron\u2019s Chief Executive, Mike Wirth, announced on 6 October that <strong>The price of physical crude oil for delivery to Asia was closer to $150 per barrel<\/strong>, rather than to $100.<\/p>\n<p>These figures relate to different dates and terms of supply, so they cannot be directly compared as simultaneous quotations for the same commodity.<\/p>\n<h2>Trump\u2019s energy truce has not halted the rise in prices<\/h2>\n<p>Another important factor was the uncertainty surrounding the agreements between the US and Russia.<\/p>\n<p>On 11 October, US President Donald Trump announced an immediate <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/main-news\/tramp-enerhetychne-peremyria-ukraina-rosiya-11-zhovtnia\/\">energy truce<\/a> between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, stating that both sides had agreed to cease the relevant strikes.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the President of Ukraine <strong>Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/strong> reported that Russian attacks on energy infrastructure were continuing. Moscow has not confirmed that it has complied with the announced agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Russia is set to supply a further 300,000 tonnes of diesel.
