According to preliminary reports, the target was the Surgut Condensate Stabilisation Plant (CSP), which is part of Gazprom and is located approximately 2,400 kilometres from the Ukrainian border. A fire broke out following the attack, and thick black smoke rose above the site. The region\u2019s governor, Ruslan Kukharuk, confirmed the drone attack and the fire at the industrial facility, but did not name the plant. The Surgut CPC has a design capacity of 12 million tonnes of raw materials per year.<\/p>\n<h2>An industrial facility caught fire in the Surgut district following a drone attack<\/h2>\n<p>On Friday, 16 October, residents of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug reported the sighting of drones and a large-scale fire in an industrial area. Footage circulating on social media shows large flames and a column of thick black smoke rising above the industrial buildings.<\/p>\n<p>County Governor <strong>Ruslan Kukharuk<\/strong> confirmed that a fire had broken out following a drone attack on an industrial site in the Surgut district. According to him, the emergency services are on the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier that day, a drone attack alert had been issued in the region. Due to the threat, flight arrivals and departures were temporarily restricted at the airports in Surgut, Sovetsky and Uray.<\/p>\n<h2>What is known about the Surgut Condensate Stabilisation Plant<\/h2>\n<p>The Viktor Chernomyrdin Surgut Gas Condensate Processing Plant is one of Russia\u2019s largest gas condensate processing facilities. The plant is part of Gazprom Processing, which is part of the \u00ab<a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/world\/udar-npz-gazprom-salavat-bashkortostan\/\">Gazprom<\/a>\u00bb. The plant is situated approximately 35 kilometres from the city of Surgut.<\/p>\n<p>The production complex has been in operation since 1985 and processes hydrocarbon feedstock sourced from gas fields in Western Siberia.<\/p>\n<p>According to the company\u2019s official figures, the plant manufactures several types of products:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>AI-92 and AI-95 motor petrol;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>winter and Arctic diesel fuel;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>TS-1 fuel for jet aircraft engines;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>stable gas condensate;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>condensed hydrocarbon gases and other refinery products.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The company also arranges for the transport of finished products by rail, road, pipeline and water.<\/p>\n<h2>Why is the Surgut Oil Refinery important to the Russian fuel industry?<\/h2>\n<p>According to Gazprom, the design capacity of the Surgut Condensate Stabilisation Plant is 12 million tonnes of hydrocarbon feedstock per year. This figure represents the maximum design processing capacity, not the annual volume of fuel production.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, the company set a production record, processing around 11 million tonnes of raw materials. As well as supplying fuel to the domestic Russian market, the plant plays an important role in the processing of condensate from Siberian gas fields. The plant operates units for the stabilisation and processing of raw materials, as well as for the production of motor fuels.<\/p>\n<p>If the attack has caused damage to production equipment, this could affect output levels.
