A group of masked individuals smashed the windows, forced their way inside and set the building alight. The fire quickly spread to the upper floors and the roof of the building, which had been erected 143 years earlier. Subsequently, the campanile — a decorative clock tower, the top of which reached 43 metres — collapsed. Firefighters attempted to save the rest of the building, which is listed as a historic monument in France. The incident was one of the most serious cases of damage to public buildings during the nationwide protests against the rising cost of living.

In Limoges, protesters stormed the town hall and started a fire

On Saturday, 17 October, in the French city of Limoges, a demonstration involving thousands of people escalated into riots, culminating in a major fire at the historic town hall. According to AFP, at the end of the protest, a group of people with their faces covered attacked the town hall.

First, the attackers set fire to a municipal police car outside the town hall. They then smashed the windows, forced their way inside and started a fire. The blaze broke out on the ground floor. The flames quickly spread to one of the wings of the building and later engulfed the roof.

At around 8.00 pm local time, the fire brigade were still battling the blaze, trying to prevent further damage to the building.

According to reports by French journalists, hundreds of people gathered outside the town hall to watch the fire. City council staff and local officials were shocked by the extent of the damage.

A historic tower that had stood for 143 years has collapsed

The greatest concern was caused by the fire spreading to the roof and the wooden structures in the upper part of the building. Due to the high temperature, there was a risk of the roof and the decorative clock tower collapsing.

Later, the local media outlet *ici Limousin* reported that the campanile, which was one of the town hall’s most recognisable architectural features, had collapsed. The top of the tower stood 43 metres above ground level. The historic The building was officially opened on 14 July 1883.

The extent of the final damage to the building and the feasibility of restoring individual historical features are to be determined by experts once the emergency repair work has been completed.

What is the historic Limoges Town Hall famous for?

The Hôtel de Ville de Limoges is one of the city’s most notable architectural landmarks. It was designed by a French architect Charles-Alfred Leclerc, who also worked on state architectural projects in Versailles. Construction took place from 1879 to 1883.

The architecture of the town hall combines elements of the Neo-Renaissance and other historical styles. When designing the building, the architect drew inspiration, in particular, from the monumental Hôtel de Ville in Paris. The façade was adorned with sculptures, decorative mosaics and a large clock. A campanile towered above the central part of the building. Inside were state rooms, historic murals and halls for holding ceremonial events.

In 1975, part of the building and the adjacent ornamental fountain complex were listed in the French register of historic monuments.

The fire on 17 October threatened the preservation of a significant part of Limoges’ architectural heritage.

The historic town hall building in Limoges, France.

Police cars were set alight and shops were looted in the city

The arson attack on the town hall was not the only incident of violence during the protests in Limoges. According to French media reports, clashes between individual groups of rioters and the police took place in several areas of the city.

Near the roundabout, the attackers set fire to a police car. In the centre of Limoges, there were reports of shops being robbed and property being damaged.

Clashes broke out between law enforcement officers and rioters near the prefecture of the Haute-Vienne department. Various objects, including pyrotechnic devices, were thrown at the police, whilst the security forces used tear gas.

Most of the protesters did not take part in the attack on the town hall. The French media attribute the acts of violence to isolated groups of attackers.

Why have large-scale protests broken out in France?

On 17 October, the following events took place in France: nationwide demonstrations against the rising cost of living and the declining availability of public services. Students, trade unions, members of the «Yellow Vests» movement and other civil society organisations have joined the protest movement.

Among the main causes of dissatisfaction are high fuel prices, rising living costs, problems in the education sector and cuts to public spending.

According to the French Ministry of the Interior, around 550,000 people took to the streets across the country to demonstrate. The organisers claimed a higher figure — around 800,000 participants.

In several major cities, peaceful gatherings were marred by clashes, cars being set alight and damage to public buildings.

President of France Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence, whilst the Minister of the Interior Laurent Núñez confirmed the attack on
