By the evening, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu had reported that around 1,200 people had been arrested and 150 police officers and gendarmes had been injured.

Briefly about the main points

The Minister of the Interior estimated the number of participants in 110 marches at 550,000.

The organisers put the number of participants in the demonstrations at around 800,000.

In the evening, Lecornu reported that around 1,200 security personnel had been detained and 150 wounded.

A large proportion of the demonstrations were peaceful; the violence was attributed to isolated groups.

Macron stated that those involved in the attacks would be prosecuted and punished.

Two estimates of the scale of mobilisation

According to the Minister of the Interior Lorana Nunez, around 550,000 people took part in 110 marches across the country. The organisers, including the CGT trade union and student organisations, estimated the number of participants at around 800,000.

The demonstrations brought together school and university student organisations, trade unions, workers from various sectors, the «yellow vests» and other groups. Much of the march and the protests took place peacefully, whilst the media and the authorities attributed the violence to isolated groups.

Clashes and fires in Paris and other cities

In Paris, there were reports of clashes with the police, barricades, the use of fireworks against law enforcement officers, fires and looting of shops. The police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse aggressive groups.

The violence was not confined to the capital. In Limoges, following a demonstration set fire to the town hall, which opened in 1883: according to the prefect, the fire destroyed a significant part of the building. In Marseille, rioters broke into the town hall and damaged one of the halls, whilst in Lyon, the tourist office on Place Bellecour was set alight.

In Nantes, there were reports of an attempted break-in at the town hall, smashed windows and damage to property. The authorities have not yet determined the total amount of material damage.

Preliminary figures on arrests and casualties

As of the evening of 17 October Sébastien Lecornu He reported that around 1,200 people had been detained and 150 police officers and gendarmes had been injured. This is a preliminary, updated figure: the Minister of the Interior had previously reported approximately 400 detentions.

In Montpellier, the prefecture reported, according to *Le Monde*, that 63 people had been arrested and 36 police officers injured. The police are continuing to identify those involved in the attacks on government buildings and shops.

In Saint-Étienne, a 17-year-old protester suffered a serious injury to his arm following a grenade explosion. According to initial reports, the grenade was fired by law enforcement officers; the type of munition and all the circumstances of the incident are being established by an investigation handed over to the General Inspectorate of the French National Police (IGPN).

What sparked the protests and how the authorities responded

The mobilisation on 17 October brought together demands to curb the high cost of living, improve incomes and ensure the accessibility of public services, alongside concerns regarding education. A wave of student protests began in late September amid complaints about learning conditions and insufficient funding for educational institutions.

President Emmanuel Macron He condemned the attacks on government buildings, shops and law enforcement officers. He stated that those involved in the violence would be prosecuted and punished.

The authorities are continuing to assess the impact of the unrest, and preliminary figures on arrests and casualties may be subject to change.

Following the protests in France on 17 October, Lecornu reported that around 1,200 people had been arrested and 150 police officers and gendarmes had been injured.

У Франції протести переросли у погроми: 1200 затриманих і 150 поранених силовиків. У Парижі та містах підпалювали авто й грабували магазини.
[805619
805624
post-33664","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-world","tag-805624
["GET
