Emergency repair work has fully or partially restored power to more than 600 settlements affected by Russian attacks. The highest number of power restorations was recorded in the capital and in the Donetsk region.

Briefly about the main points

Power companies have restored electricity to more than 1.7 million households.

The works have covered more than 600 settlements.

Electricity has been restored to 642,500 households in Kyiv.

In the Donetsk region, electricity has been restored to 474,200 homes.

Following repairs, stabilisation and emergency restrictions may be in place in the regions.

Kyiv and the Donetsk region received the largest number of restorations

In Kyiv power engineers Power has been restored to 642,500 households. The widespread power cuts in the capital were caused by attacks on the main power lines through which the city receives its electricity.

In the Donetsk region, electricity has been restored to 474,200 homes. Work there is being hampered by constant shelling and the proximity to areas of fighting.

In the Odesa region, power has been restored to 243,500 households; in the Kyiv region, to over 229,400; and in the Dnipropetrovsk region, to 166,400. These figures reflect the number of power connections restored over the course of the week, rather than the number of households without power at any one time.

Why power cuts may persist following emergency repairs

Russia continues to attack energy infrastructure, particularly in Kyiv and the Kyiv and Odesa regions, according to DTEK. Damage to the main networks and distribution equipment causes supply disruptions and makes it necessary to restrict consumption.

In some regions, stabilisation schedules are in place. In the event of significant damage or incidents, emergency restrictions may be introduced which do not follow the usual hourly schedules.

Emergency teams are beginning repairs following authorisation from the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the State Emergency Service. This is necessary to ensure safe access to the equipment, given the risk of further strikes.

Restoration work continues

A week earlier, from 5 to 11 October, DTEK specialists restored the electricity supply to nearly 1.9 million households in the capital and four regions. At that time, the work covered, either fully or partially, more than 300 settlements.

The speed at which power is restored depends on the nature of the damage, the condition of the equipment and safety considerations; in some cases, power is restored in stages. Even after emergency repairs have been completed, restrictions may remain in place due to damage to other parts of the power system or a shortage of available capacity.

As of 20 October, DTEK is continuing its restoration work in the affected regions. The duration of the restrictions will depend on the condition of the power grid, the results of the repairs and any further damage that may occur.

DTEK has restored power to 642,500 households in Kyiv and 474,200 in the Donetsk region.
