On 20 October 2026 in Kyiv, an operating theatre at the Academician M. D. Strazhesko Institute of Cardiology of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine was damaged as a result of a Russian attack. The strike hit the sixth floor of the medical facility, where operations are carried out on patients with cardiovascular diseases. One patient was injured and received the necessary medical attention. There were no fatalities as a result of this strike. The damage was reported by the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Serhiy Koretskyi. This is the second Russian attack to have affected the institute.<\/p>\n
On the afternoon of 20 October, Russian forces continued to attack Kyiv with strike drones. One of the targets damaged was the Strazhesko Institute of Cardiology.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Sergey Koretsky<\/strong> reported that this time the incident affected an operating theatre located on the sixth floor of the medical facility.<\/p>\n The photographs released show significant damage to the premises. The floor is covered with debris from the ceiling structures and building materials. Medical equipment remains inside, including an operating table, X-ray equipment and monitors.<\/p>\n The extent of the damage to medical equipment and the scale of the repair work required have not yet been determined.<\/p>\n According to the head of government, one patient was injured as a result of the attack on the Strazhesko Institute. The injured person was provided with all necessary medical care. No information has yet been released regarding his age, the nature of his injuries or his current condition. There were no fatalities as a result of this attack on the medical facility.<\/p>\n Serhiy Koretskyi emphasised that the institute admits patients with heart conditions from various regions of Ukraine. The facility carries out complex operations, treats patients who have suffered heart attacks and provides specialist cardiological care.<\/p>\n The Prime Minister thanked the doctors and staff for their work amidst constant Russian attacks.<\/p>\n This is the second time the Strazhesko Institute of Cardiology has been damaged as a result of Russian shelling.<\/p>\n On 28 September 2025, during a large-scale combined attack on Kyiv, the clinical wing of the medical facility was hit. The fourth floor sustained significant damage, whilst parts of the third and fifth floors were partially destroyed.<\/p>\n According to official information from the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, two people \u2014 a healthcare worker and a patient who were inside the building \u2014 were killed in the attack.<\/p>\n Following the shelling, two wards at the institute were temporarily taken out of service, and patients were transferred to other premises. At the same time, the facility continued to provide medical care.<\/p>\n The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has allocated 37 million hryvnias for emergency repair work.<\/p>\n A further attack on 20 October 2026 once again caused damage to the institute\u2019s premises, this time on the sixth floor.<\/p>\n The Academician\u2019s Institute of Cardiology Mykola Strazhesko<\/strong> is a specialised medical and scientific institution of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.<\/p>\n It treats patients with cardiovascular diseases, carries out diagnostic tests, performs surgical procedures and provides rehabilitation following serious conditions, including heart attacks.<\/p>\n In addition to its clinical work, the institute carries out research in the field of cardiology and develops modern methods of diagnosis and treatment.<\/p>\n The damage to the operating theatre means that the premises, building services and medical equipment must be inspected before they can be used again.
