The infection was detected in a woman who arrived in the country\u2019s capital, Abuja, after travelling through East Africa. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Nigeria has become the fifth country to record the virus since the start of the current outbreak in May 2026. Medical staff have already identified 44 people who have been in contact with the infected woman. Meanwhile, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the epidemic began, the death toll has exceeded 4,600.<\/p>\n<div class=\"news-summary-box\"><strong>Briefly about the main points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nigeria has confirmed its first case of Ebola in over ten years.<\/li>\n<li>The illness was detected in a woman who arrived in Abuja after travelling via Uganda.<\/li>\n<li>44 close contacts are under medical supervision.<\/li>\n<li>Since the outbreak began in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, more than 4,600 people have died.<\/li>\n<li>There is currently no authorised vaccine for the Bundibugyo virus strain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Ebola has been detected in the Nigerian capital: what is known about the infected person<\/h2>\n<p>On 20 October, the Nigerian Ministry of Health confirmed a case of infection with the virus <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/world\/spalah-eboly-kinhoze\/\">Ebola<\/a> variety <strong>Bundibugyo<\/strong>. The infection was diagnosed in a woman who arrived in the country on an international flight at the beginning of the month.<\/p>\n<p>According to the WHO, the first symptoms of the illness appeared on 7 October \u2014 four days after her arrival in Nigeria. On 11 October, the patient sought treatment at a private hospital in Abuja. Initially, her symptoms resembled those of malaria, but her condition did not improve.<\/p>\n<p>Laboratory tests, the results of which were received on 20 October, confirmed infection with the Bundibugyo virus. The woman has been placed in isolation; she is under medical supervision and is receiving the necessary care.<\/p>\n<p>Nigerian epidemiologists have identified at least 44 people who may have come into contact with the infected woman. Among them are healthcare workers who treated the patient before she was diagnosed.<\/p>\n<h2>The Ebola virus has spread to a fifth country<\/h2>\n<p>The outbreak began in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in May 2026. Subsequently, cases were detected outside the country, notably in Uganda and Kenya.<\/p>\n<p>According to the WHO, following confirmation of the infection in Nigeria, cases have now been reported in five states. This figure also includes cases linked to the international movement of patients.<\/p>\n<p>It has been reported in Uganda that the infected woman had previously been in <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/world\/ebola-ituri-kongo-65-zahyblykh-cdc-afryky\/\">The Democratic Republic of the Congo<\/a>, and she was merely travelling through Uganda in transit. Representatives of the Ugandan Ministry of Health have emphasised that there are currently no active confirmed cases of Ebola in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The exact location where the patient became infected has not yet been established. Experts are continuing to retrace her movements in order to identify any possible contacts with other people.<\/p>\n<h2>Over 4,600 deaths: the scale of the Ebola outbreak in 2026<\/h2>\n<p>The epidemic situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo remains the most serious. According to a Reuters report dated 21 October, 4,646 people have died in the country since the start of the current outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>The total number of confirmed cases has exceeded 9,500. The high mortality rate is a particular cause for concern \u2014 approximately half of the confirmed patients have died.<\/p>\n<p>The current outbreak has been caused by the Bundibugyo virus, which belongs to <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/science-tech\/vaktsyna-ebola-vyprobuvannia-zatrymka\/\">groups of viruses<\/a> Ebola. Unlike the Zaire strain, for which a vaccine has already been developed, there is currently no authorised preventive treatment for the Bundibugyo strain.<\/p>\n<p>This makes it more difficult to curb the spread of the infection. The key measures remain the early detection of cases, isolation, contact tracing and the protection of healthcare staff.<\/p>\n<h2>How is the Ebola virus transmitted, and what are the symptoms of the disease?<\/h2>\n<p>Ebola is a severe infectious disease that can cause serious damage to internal organs and life-threatening complications.<\/p>\n<p>The virus is transmitted from person to person through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person, as well as through objects and surfaces contaminated with these fluids.<\/p>\n<p>The incubation period ranges from 2 to 21 days. However, a person is not considered infectious until symptoms of the disease appear.<\/p>\n<p>The most common initial symptoms include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>A sudden rise in body temperature.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Severe headache and general weakness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Muscle and throat pain.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>In severe cases, this can lead to impaired function of internal organs and bleeding.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Doctors emphasise that the initial symptoms may resemble those of malaria, flu or other infectious diseases. That is why laboratory confirmation is crucial for establishing a diagnosis.<\/p>\n<h2>Is there a risk of a new Ebola outbreak in other countries?<\/h2>\n<p>The spread of the virus beyond the borders of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has raised concerns amongst international health organisations. Experts are paying particular attention to countries with extensive international air links, as infected people may travel before symptoms appear.<\/p>\n<p>The WHO has called on African countries to step up epidemiological surveillance at their borders, ensure that laboratories and healthcare facilities are prepared, and make the necessary protective equipment available.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the organisation does not recommend imposing blanket restrictions on travel and international trade due to the current outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>As of 21 October, there have been no confirmed reports of this outbreak spreading in Ukraine. The WHO had previously assessed the global risk as low, but emphasised the need to continually review this assessment in line with developments in the epidemic situation.<\/p>\n<p>At present, the main priority for international health services is to identify new cases of infection quickly and prevent the virus from spreading further amongst the
