On 22 October, Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced these preparations following an inspection of one of the largest hospitals on the left bank, where around 740 patients are currently being treated as inpatients.

Briefly about the main points

Eight diesel generators and a solar power station have been installed at the accredited hospital.

The premises have their own boiler room, a borehole and a backup connection to the mains water supply.

Beds for patients and an operating theatre have been set up in the shelter.

Medical facilities in the capital have 480 generators for emergency power supply.

It has not yet been confirmed that the entire network is fully prepared for prolonged power cuts.

The boiler room, the borehole and the backup power supply at the hospital on the left bank

The inspected healthcare facility is already receiving heating from its own boiler room. A borehole has been installed here to provide an independent water supply, and a backup connection to the mains has also been provided «Kyivvodokanal».

The hospital will be supplied with electricity by eight diesel generators and a 250 kW solar power station. Off-grid outdoor lighting powered by solar panels and vertical wind turbines are also being installed on the premises.

Most in-patient hospital patients require complex operations or have already undergone them. Backup systems must enable staff to continue working in the event of faults or power cuts affecting the city’s utility networks.

The shelter enables emergency operations to be carried out during an alert

A shelter has been set up in the hospital, complete with beds for patients and an operating theatre equipped with the necessary medical equipment. In this sheltered area, medical staff will be able to carry out emergency procedures should it become unsafe to remain in the regular wards.

This approach is particularly important for intensive care patients and those in a critical condition who are dependent on ventilators, monitors and life-support systems. «Intensive care units and operating theatres in hospitals must operate continuously under all circumstances», he said Klitschko.

What reserves do the capital’s healthcare facilities have, and what do they plan to expand?

According to figures released by the mayor on 14 October, there are 480 in Kyiv’s healthcare facilities generators. Fifteen hospitals have their own boreholes, and boreholes are being installed in a further six facilities.

Eleven hospitals already have an independent heat supply from their own boiler houses. By the end of 2026, the city authorities plan to increase this number to 21. A further 70 mobile boiler houses have also been prepared to provide a backup heat supply to various municipal facilities.

Some of the systems are already operational, but the readiness of the entire network has not yet been confirmed

Increasing the autonomy of healthcare facilities is part of Kyiv’s preparations for possible disruptions to utility services during the autumn and winter months and the risk of further Russian strikes on energy infrastructure. For hospitals, it is not only backup power that is important, but also water, heating and the ability to provide care safely during an emergency.

In September, the Director of the Department of Health KSCA Tetyana Mostipan reported that around 65% healthcare facilities within the capable network were fully self-sufficient. At that time, the administration planned to ensure the self-sufficiency of the entire hospital network by the end of October.

As of 22 October, some of the capital’s hospitals have already been fitted with stand-alone systems, whilst work is still ongoing in others. The city authorities have not yet confirmed that all healthcare facilities are fully prepared for prolonged power cuts.

Hospitals in Kyiv are being fitted with autonomous power systems to ensure that intensive care units and operating theatres can continue to function during power cuts and air raid alerts.

Лікарні Києва забезпечують автономними системами, щоб реанімації та операційні працювали під час блекаутів і повітряних тривог.
[806778
806775
post-34252","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-suspilstvo","tag-806775
["GET
