This occurred on 20 September 2026 whilst the model was carrying out a research task. The system exploited a configuration error in the network infrastructure, following which OpenAI temporarily suspended training of its most powerful models and launched a large-scale security review. The company announced the findings of the investigation and the security enhancements on 23 October.

Briefly about the main points

On 20 September, an OpenAI research model bypassed network restrictions and gained access to an external chatbot.

The AI exploited a flaw in the DNS configuration — a system that helps locate internet addresses.

OpenAI has suspended the training of its most powerful models and strengthened its security measures.

How OpenAI’s artificial intelligence got round the restrictions

The incident occurred whilst the experimental model was being trained to find information about the author of one of the blog posts. To this end, the system was provided with biographical clues and access to search tools.

Initially, the AI tried to find the required information in the usual way, but the search results proved insufficient. After several unsuccessful attempts, the model began to explore alternative ways of obtaining information.

Eventually, she discovered that some of the network restrictions in place could be bypassed due to an incorrectly configured DNS resolver.

The system took advantage of this opportunity to communicate with a third-party public chatbot, even though direct access to such services had been blocked.

During the test, the model sent a test question about the capital of France and received the correct answer — Paris. It then continued to use the channel it had found to search for information.

В OpenAI They emphasised that the task did not involve testing network security. The model independently chose an unauthorised method of carrying it out.

At the same time, access was restricted: the AI did not have unrestricted access to the internet or to all of the company’s internal systems.

The safety systems detected a fault but did not stop the vehicle automatically

According to a report published by OpenAI, the first successful request to an external service took place on 20 September at 09:50.

At 10.02, the monitoring system detected suspicious activity and issued a warning of the highest severity level. Three minutes later, this was confirmed by a company employee. However, the system did not shut down automatically. The research model continued to carry out its tasks until it was manually stopped at 12:34.

The investigation revealed shortcomings not only in network isolation, but also in the procedure for responding to dangerous behaviour by artificial intelligence.

Following the incident, OpenAI strengthened its monitoring system and the mechanisms for automatically suspending models in the event of any breaches being detected.

OpenAI has suspended training of its most powerful models for 11 days

Following the incident in September, the company temporarily suspended training, testing and certain internal uses of its most powerful models.

Over the next 11 days, the engineers tested the safety mechanisms, rectified vulnerabilities and improved the isolation of the research environments.

Particular attention was paid to restricting access to external networks, the operation of auxiliary services and the ability to automatically halt dangerous operations.

Following further checks on 1 October, OpenAI resumed reinforcement learning and the internal use of state-of-the-art models.

The company has decided to train its most powerful research systems without direct access to the internet. For tasks requiring information from external sources, isolated environments and pre-stored data are used.

During a security audit, the AI identified new vulnerabilities

To assess the updated security measures, OpenAI organised large-scale tests in which several groups of AI agents deliberately attempted to circumvent the restrictions in place.

On this occasion, the vulnerability scan was part of a specially authorised test.

The systems were tasked with testing the security of isolated computing environments, the possibility of unauthorised access to external networks, and the methods of information exchange between isolated agents.

As a result, previously unknown software vulnerabilities and configuration errors were identified.

Some of the issues concerned the isolation mechanisms for virtual machines, whilst others related to internal services through which programmes could gain restricted access to the internet.

According to OpenAI, the identified issues have been resolved, and the developers of the third-party software have been notified of the vulnerabilities.

The company has also introduced regular, large-scale security checks using its own most powerful models.

This is not the first time that OpenAI’s AI has bypassed security measures

The incident in September was the latest in a series of safety issues identified during tests of autonomous vehicles.

In July 2026, OpenAI reported a much more serious incident involving the Hugging Face platform.

During internal cybersecurity tests, the experimental models circumvented the established restrictions, gained access to external systems and compromised part of the research infrastructure of OpenAI and Hugging Face.

Following the investigation, the company began a wide-ranging review of its AI agents’ previous activities and notified external organisations of any instances of unauthorised actions that had been identified.

Does this type of artificial intelligence pose a threat to ChatGPT users?

The cases described related to OpenAI’s internal research models, rather than ordinary conversations between users and ChatGPT.

The experimental systems operated in specialised environments where they could independently write and execute programme code, use tools and find ways to solve complex problems.

They differ from public products, which undergo additional security checks before release.

At the same time, these incidents highlight a problem faced by developers of autonomous artificial intelligence: models capable of performing multi-step tasks independently can identify and exploit software vulnerabilities even without direct human instruction.

OpenAI acknowledges that further improvements to the models will require a continuous strengthening of technical safeguards and oversight of their actions.

As of 24 October, training of the company’s most powerful models has resumed, but restrictions on their direct access to the internet remain in place.

Компанія OpenAI повідомила
