Demonstrations are taking place in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Orléans and other cities. As of 13:00 local time, the police had arrested 135 people and, during searches, seized fireworks, metal balls, slingshots, homemade weapons and a katana. The authorities have mobilised 70,000 law enforcement officers to maintain order. In Lyon, the police used tear gas, whilst in Paris the main demonstration began without any major incidents.

Briefly about the main points

On 24 October, a new wave of nationwide protests is taking place in France.

As of 13:00, the police reported that 135 people had been detained and 35,000 people had taken part in the protests.

Law enforcement officers seized fireworks, metal balls, slingshots, a katana and other dangerous items.

70,000 police officers and gendarmes were deployed to maintain order.

Tear gas was used in Lyon, whilst the route of the demonstration was changed in Paris.

135 people have been arrested in France: what the police seized

French Minister of the Interior Laurent Núñez reported that by 13:00 local time law enforcement officers detained 135 people in various regions of the country. A significant proportion of the arrests were made during preventive checks on roads, at railway stations and near the sites of demonstrations.

According to the ministry, police officers seized metal and lead pellets, slingshots, fireworks, pyrotechnic devices, homemade weapons, airsoft pistols and a katana.

Over a thousand checks were carried out in Paris and its suburbs. Núñez stated that law enforcement officers had been ordered to respond promptly to any attempts at rioting, assaults and damage to property.

At the time these figures were released, the minister had not reported any large-scale disturbances. However, the number of people detained during the day may change.

How many people took part in the protests on 24 October?

According to the Ministry of the Interior, as of 13:00, 136 protests had been recorded in France, involving approximately 35,000 people.

By way of comparison, on 17 October at the same time, the authorities reported 264 demonstrations and 60,000 participants. Therefore, according to preliminary official figures, the turnout this morning was lower than last week’s.

The protests brought together student organisations, trade unions, workers from various sectors and members of the «Yellow Vests» movement.

The protesters’ main demands relate to the rising cost of living, fuel prices, insufficient funding for education and the declining accessibility of public services.

Metro stations in Paris were closed and the protest route was changed

The French authorities have stepped up security in the capital following large-scale unrest the previous weekend. Additional police units and military personnel were deployed to patrol the area.

More than 20 metro stations in Paris have been temporarily closed. The Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay and a number of other cultural institutions are closed. Shopkeepers in central districts have fitted protective panels to their shop windows.

The police have also changed the route of the main demonstration. Instead of the planned march through the city centre, the protesters have been directed to take a route between Port d’Italie and Port de Vincennes in south-east Paris.

The decision drew criticism from trade unions and representatives of left-wing political groups. They accused the authorities of creating obstacles to peaceful assemblies. The police explained that the restrictions were necessary to protect areas where businesses and shops had been damaged during previous protests.

Police used tear gas in Lyon

In Lyon, the situation proved to be more tense. Police used tear gas to disperse a group of around 150 protesters who were attempting to block the road near the city centre.

Restrictions on holding demonstrations were in force in this area.

Local journalists reported a significant police presence, roadblocks and the movement of protesters between permitted and prohibited areas.

A trade union demonstration is also taking place in Marseille. The local authorities have authorised it to go ahead along an agreed route, although they have imposed restrictions on other demonstrations.

«Macron must resign, Le Pen must go to prison»: protest in Orléans

A separate large-scale demonstration is taking place in Orléans, where the «National Rally» party is holding its conference this weekend» Marine Le Pen.

The demonstrators are protesting against far-right political forces, chanting anti-fascist slogans and calling for the President to resign Emmanuel Macron. Also amongst the protesters Calls for Marine Le Pen to be jailed are being made.

According to police estimates, around 11,000 people gathered in Orléans. The organisers put the figure at a much higher number — approximately 26,000 participants.

The first authorised march took place without any major incidents. Meanwhile, the police continue to monitor the situation near the venue of the party conference.

Why is France once again gripped by protests?

The current wave of discontent began with student demonstrations against the shortage of teachers and the underfunding of educational institutions. Trade unions, workers and other social movements subsequently joined the protests.

On 17 October, mass demonstrations in a number of towns and cities escalated into riots, arson and looting of shops. Following this, the authorities decided to significantly step up the police presence.

As of 24 October, 10,000 more law enforcement officers had been mobilised than on the previous Saturday. Armoured vehicles, water cannons, helicopters and special units were also deployed to maintain order.

Despite the restrictions, demonstrators continue to demand that the government address social issues. The final figures for the number of participants, those detained and any possible casualties will be known once the day of protest has ended.

[805619
805624
post-34506","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-world","tag-805624
["GET
