If someone cannot afford to pay for heating, they are effectively forced to choose between food and warmth. This is unacceptable,\u00bb the European Commissioner emphasised.<\/p>\n<p>He acknowledged that, in recent years, European politicians had not taken the issue of access to housing and utilities seriously enough.<\/p>\n<h2>Why the winter of 2026\u20132027 could be challenging<\/h2>\n<p>J\u00f8rgensen explained that Europe remains vulnerable due to its dependence on <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/economics\/brytaniia-import-palnoho-z-rosiiskoi-nafty\/\">oil and gas imports<\/a>. The situation is complicated by the instability of the global energy market and the risk of further price rises.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commissioner noted that demand for fuel would rise in winter, regardless of how severe the cold spell might be.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, he emphasised that high prices are causing serious difficulties not only for the general public but also for European businesses.<\/p>\n<h2>How the European Union plans to reduce energy costs<\/h2>\n<p>The European Commission is working on measures designed to make energy more affordable for consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Among the long-term solutions, Jorgensen cited the development of renewable and nuclear energy, the electrification of the economy and the modernisation of the electricity grid.<\/p>\n<p>To reduce costs more quickly, he suggested making greater use of electric heat pumps instead of gas and oil-fired boilers.<\/p>\n<p>According to the European Commissioner\u2019s estimate, reducing electricity taxes
