The operating company has suspended the ship\u2019s operations due to a sharp rise in fuel prices and financial difficulties. Some travellers had previously sold their own homes in order to live on board permanently. There were 203 passengers from 15 countries and 156 crew members on board. The next port of call was due to be Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p>However, instead of continuing their journey, the passengers were informed that the ship\u2019s operations had been temporarily suspended. They were instructed to leave the ship by 14:00.<\/p>\n<p>According to a local authority representative, people were given around seven hours to gather their belongings. Some of the passengers flew out of Cambodia, whilst others remained in the city.<\/p>\n<p>Villa Vie Residences has stated that it is helping travellers to arrange their disembarkation and find temporary accommodation. However, passenger Randy Cassingham said he had not received any actual assistance from the operator.<\/p>\n<h2>Fuel costs have risen almost fourfold<\/h2>\n<p>The company cited a sharp rise as the reason for the cruise being cancelled <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/economics\/light-bulbs-on-the-palm-of-the-hand-10-kvitnja\/\">rising fuel prices<\/a> against the backdrop of the war with Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, monthly fuel costs, calculated per cabin, amounted to around 1,800 dollars. Recently, in some parts of Asia, they have reached 6,000\u20138,000 dollars.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s management attempted to cut costs by reducing the vessel\u2019s speed and extending the length of stay in ports. However, these measures proved insufficient.<\/p>\n<p>Executive Chairman of Villa Vie Residences <strong>Mikael Pettersson<\/strong> He explained that the company cannot pass on such a rise in costs to the ship\u2019s passengers.<\/p>\n<p>The operator now plans to carry out a financial restructuring and raise new capital over the next 60 days. There are currently no guarantees that operations will be successfully resumed.<\/p>\n<h2>Some travellers have sold their homes to live on a ship<\/h2>\n<p>The Villa Vie Odyssey set off on a long round-the-world voyage from Belfast in October 2024. The company offered its customers not just an ordinary cruise, but the opportunity to live on board the ship whilst visiting various countries.<\/p>\n<p>Passengers could purchase or rent cabins on a long-term basis. The cost of some permanent residence packages ran into hundreds of thousands of dollars. Some participants in the scheme sold their property and possessions in order to move onto the cruise ship.<\/p>\n<p>The voyage was due to last until November 2027. Instead, the passengers found themselves in Cambodia with no clear prospect of returning to the ship.<\/p>\n<p>According to local authorities, the liner is due to be refuelled and set sail from the port on 31 October.
