Pharmaceutical companies from the US and Europe are increasingly moving their research to Chinese hospitals, where experimental drugs can be tested on humans much more quickly and cheaply. According to the analytics firm Norstella, in 2025, China accounted for 45% of new clinical trials of innovative drugs worldwide. In 2008, this figure stood at less than 5%.<\/p>\n<div class=\"news-summary-box\"><strong>Briefly about the main points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>China has become one of the world\u2019s leading centres for clinical trials of new medicines.<\/li>\n<li>According to Norstella, in 2025, China accounted for 45% new studies into innovative medicines, compared with fewer than 5% in 2008.<\/li>\n<li>The cost of Phase 1 trials in China is approximately three times lower, and patient recruitment takes place two to five times faster.<\/li>\n<li>AstraZeneca, Novartis and Roche are expanding their clinical trials in Chinese hospitals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2 data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Why do pharmaceutical companies choose China?<\/h2>\n<p>The main advantages of the Chinese system were the lower cost of research, the rapid recruitment of patients and a well-developed network of specialist hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>According to estimates by a consultancy firm <strong>McKinsey<\/strong>, the cost per participant in the first phase of a clinical trial in China is approximately one-third of the global average. Patient recruitment takes place two to five times faster than in the US and Europe.<\/p>\n<p>A case in point is the experience of the American biotechnology start-up InGel Therapeutics, which is developing a treatment for a rare inherited eye condition.<\/p>\n<p>The company had just one million dollars to test its drug on humans. In the US, a similar study, according to the start-up\u2019s investors, could have cost between 10 and 20 million dollars.<\/p>\n<p>In China, however, these funds were sufficient to organise a trial at a hospital in Shanghai. Six patients have already received the experimental treatment, and the first results are expected in early 2027.<\/p>\n<h2>AstraZeneca, Novartis and Roche are expanding their research<\/h2>\n<p>China\u2019s research infrastructure is used not only by small start-ups but also by the largest international pharmaceutical companies.<\/p>\n<p>AstraZeneca is conducting early-stage trials of new medicines in China, including cell therapy <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/suspilstvo\/zrostannya-rannih-vypadkiv-raku\/\">cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Swiss-based Novartis plans to expand its Phase I and Phase II trials, whilst Roche is expanding its own clinical development capabilities in Shanghai.<\/p>\n<p>The speed of research enables companies to obtain data on the safety and preliminary efficacy of experimental drugs at an earlier stage. This helps them decide whether to invest in larger-scale trials.<\/p>\n<h2>The patients\u2019 deaths raised questions about safety<\/h2>\n<p>Despite the economic benefits, the rapid growth of the Chinese clinical trials market has been accompanied by concerns regarding the oversight of patient safety.<\/p>\n<p>In 2026, it emerged that several participants in experimental gene therapy trials had died, including two children.<\/p>\n<p>Trials initiated by hospitals and researchers themselves have attracted particular attention. In China, such projects can be carried out under a simplified procedure, without prior authorisation from the national pharmaceutical regulator, but subject to approval by an ethics committee and compliance with the established requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Following reports of patient deaths, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned that it may refuse to accept the results of overseas trials if it is unable to verify their accuracy and compliance with safety standards.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the US and Europe are preparing changes to their own regulations governing clinical
