In the Chernobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve, a bright orange fungus of the Pyronema genus, which is capable of growing on burnt-out trees, has been discovered. Its appearance is one of the signs of the gradual recovery of the natural ecosystem following the large-scale forest fires in the spring and summer of 2026. Scientists at the Chernobyl Reserve reported this unusual discovery on 30 October.<\/p>\n

Why does pyronema appear specifically after fires?<\/h2>\n

Pyronema<\/strong> It belongs to a group of fungi adapted to life in areas that have been affected by fire. Its spores are capable of surviving under adverse conditions, whilst the heating of the soil and changes to its chemical composition following a fire promote germination.<\/p>\n

Unlike ordinary fungi, Pironema does not have a distinctive stem or a large cap. Its fruiting bodies are very small, cup-shaped, and pink, orange or reddish-orange in colour.<\/p>\n

Individual fruiting bodies may fuse together, forming continuous bright patches or crust-like clusters. It was precisely such formations that scientists observed on the charred wood in the Chernobyl Nature Reserve.<\/p>\n

Against the backdrop of the blackened tree stumps, the mushroom\u2019s rich colour stands out particularly well.<\/p>\n

How nature in Chernobyl is recovering after the fires<\/h2>\n

Large-scale forest fires<\/a>, which swept through the nature reserve in the spring and summer, destroyed part of the vegetation and significantly altered the habitat of animals and other organisms. However, life is gradually returning to the scorched areas.<\/p>\n

Previously, scientists had observed the appearance of red forest ants, which, following the fires, began to rebuild their nests and colonise the burnt-out areas.<\/p>\n

To investigate this phenomenon, experts have even launched a research project entitled \u00abAnt Post-Apocalypse\u00bb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The discovery of Pyronema provided yet another example of the natural processes that take place on burnt areas long before the forest vegetation has fully recovered.<\/p>\n

The nature reserve points out that the first signs of life returning can be seen even before green shoots appear \u2014 directly on the ground and on the wood, which still bears traces of the fire.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
