Coinbase has already strengthened its protection of crypto assets, whilst other market participants are calling for the creation of a joint rapid response system to cyber threats.<\/p>\n<div class=\"news-summary-box\"><strong>Briefly about the main points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hackers stole around $6.3 billion from the Binance cryptocurrency exchange \u2014 this is the largest known hack in the cryptocurrency industry.<\/li>\n<li>The bulk of the funds was withdrawn in about 20 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Coinbase has strengthened its asset protection, whilst Kraken is reviewing its own security systems.<\/li>\n<li>Tether and Circle have frozen more than $2.3 billion in assets linked to the attack.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2 data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Coinbase and Kraken respond to the Binance hack<\/h2>\n<p>The US cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has announced further changes to its cold storage systems for cryptographic keys. The company emphasised that it has taken precautionary measures to protect its clients\u2019 assets.<\/p>\n<p>Kraken is also analysing the circumstances <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/economics\/zlam-binance-6-3-miliarda-dolariv\/\">attacks on Binance<\/a>, in order to identify potential vulnerabilities in its own infrastructure. Representatives of the exchange noted that its specialists check the systems daily for possible threats.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Perkins, head of the cryptocurrency division at investment firm Franklin Templeton, has stated that the sector needs to strengthen its cybersecurity immediately, particularly given the increasingly close integration of digital assets into the traditional financial system.<\/p>\n<h2>How did the hackers manage to steal $6.3 billion?<\/h2>\n<p>The attack on Binance took place on 29 October. According to estimates by the analytics firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis, the attackers withdrew the bulk of the funds in around 20 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Co-CEO of Binance <strong>Richard Teng<\/strong> He reported that the initial point of entry may have been an infected laptop belonging to one of the engineers. It was probably through this that the hackers gained access to the transaction processing systems.<\/p>\n<p>The company subsequently discovered further evidence of a breach. The investigation is being hampered by malware that was erasing traces of the attackers\u2019 activities.<\/p>\n<p>Experts at TRM Labs and Chainalysis suspect that North Korean hackers were involved, as the attack shares similarities with previous large-scale cryptocurrency thefts. The identities of the attackers have not yet been officially established.<\/p>\n<h2>It was possible to freeze some of the stolen funds<\/h2>\n<p>Following the hack, Binance temporarily suspended cryptocurrency withdrawals and promised to compensate users for their losses at its own expense.<\/p>\n<p>Tether has frozen nearly $1.57 billion in assets linked to the attack, whilst Circle has frozen a further $800 million. In total, Binance and its partners have reported that they have frozen or traced approximately $3 billion of the stolen funds.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, it is not possible to freeze Bitcoin and Ethereum through a centralised process, which makes it considerably more difficult to recover some of the assets.<\/p>\n<h2>Cryptocurrency exchanges are offering a joint security system<\/h2>\n<p>Chief Executive Officer of OKX <strong>Star Xu<\/strong> called for the creation of a real-time information-sharing system between exchanges. It should enable breaches to be reported promptly, suspicious transfers to be tracked and stolen assets to be frozen.<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of the attack on 29 October, Bitcoin fell by more than 4%, whilst Ethereum fell by over 5%.
