According to the results of a new Ipsos poll, 56% of respondents would vote in favour of applying for re-entry into the EU, whilst 30% are against it. Support for European integration is growing against the backdrop of statements by Prime Minister Andy Bernam, who has openly spoken of the possibility of the country rejoining the EU, reports The Independent.

Briefly about the main points

56% Britons support the country’s re-entry into the European Union.

30% of those surveyed are opposed to a return to the EU.

Among young people aged under 35, support stands at 73%.

54% respondents expect economic benefits from EU membership.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has suggested that the country could rejoin the European Union in the future.

Most Britons support rejoining the European Union

An Ipsos poll, carried out between 15 and 22 October amongst 1,109 adult residents of the UK, showed a rise in support for the country rejoining the EU. Compared with May, the proportion of those in favour of rejoining rose by four percentage points — from 52% to 56%. At the same time, the number of opponents fell from 33% to 30%.

Among Britons who are highly likely to take part in a future referendum, support for rejoining the European Union is even higher — 63%. 34% were against, whilst 3% were undecided.

The younger generation shows the strongest support for re-entry. Among people aged under 35, 73% are in favour of rejoining the EU. Similar sentiments prevail amongst Labour Party voters: 77% of those who voted for the party in the 2024 general election are in favour of reinstating membership.

By contrast, among older Britons, attitudes towards European integration are noticeably more cautious. In the 55+ age group, 47% of those surveyed are against rejoining the EU, whilst 39% support it. Among Reform UK voters, 76% were against rejoining, whilst among Conservative Party supporters, 54% were against it.

The results reveal a significant generational and political divide, which remains one of the key factors in the British debate on future relations with Europe.

The British expect economic benefits, but fear a loss of autonomy

One of the main reasons for the support return to the EU There are expectations of economic benefits. According to Ipsos, 54% of respondents believe that reinstating membership will have a positive impact on the British economy in the long term. A further 53% expect national security to be strengthened.

Half of those surveyed predict an improvement in the economic situation, even in the short term. At the same time, only 41% are convinced that rejoining the European Union will have a direct positive impact on their standard of living.

Despite widespread support for European integration, the British remain concerned about a possible curtailment of the country’s autonomy. Indeed, 39% of respondents believe that EU membership will undermine the UK’s ability to make decisions in line with its own national interests. Only 25% hold the opposite view.

Expectations regarding immigration, public services and political stability also remain mixed. Only 37% of those surveyed believe that EU accession will improve the ability to control migration flows.

Thus, support for rejoining the EU does not imply that the British public fully agrees with all the consequences of European integration. Some members of the public expect economic benefits, but at the same time fear losing control over domestic policy.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has spoken of a return to the EU

The new poll has been published against the backdrop of a shift in the British government’s political rhetoric. The Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who took over as head of the government in July 2026, has been speaking ever more openly about the need to review relations with Brussels.

On 26 October, Burnham stated that he would like to see the UK return to the European Union within his lifetime. According to him, Brexit has not delivered all the results its supporters had hoped for, and the current model of cooperation with the EU does not fully serve the country’s interests.

At the same time, the Prime Minister stressed that he has no plans to take the UK back into the European Union during the current parliamentary term. He also ruled out the possibility of imposing such a decision on the electorate without public debate.

Burnam suggests that the issue of rejoining the EU or restoring freedom of movement could form part of Labour’s future election manifesto. However, the government has not yet put forward a definitive policy proposal.

It is important to note that the October Ipsos poll was conducted between 15 and 22 October, i.e. before the Prime Minister’s most recent public statements. Therefore, its results cannot be regarded as a direct reaction to Bernam’s speech on 26 October. Rather, they reflect a broader trend in shifting public attitudes towards Brexit.

Could the UK rejoin the EU?

In the referendum on 23 June 2016, 51.9% of voters voted in favour of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union, whilst 48.1% voted against. The country officially left the EU on 31 January 2020, bringing to an end more than 47 years of membership.

Since then, relations between London and Brussels have been governed by separate agreements, particularly regarding trade. However, rejoining the EU would require a far more complex process than a simple political decision by the British Government.

According to Article 49 of the Treaty on European Union, the UK will have to submit a new application for membership, undergo negotiations and agree the terms of membership. The final agreement will require the unanimous approval of the EU Member States, the consent of the European Parliament and subsequent ratification.

Migration rules, access to the single market, budget contributions and the country’s other obligations towards the European Union may form a separate subject of negotiations.

At the same time, public support for holding a new referendum also remains mixed. According to Ipsos, 49% of Britons support holding the vote before the next general election, whilst 51% support holding it afterwards.

The next significant milestone in relations between London and Brussels will be the UK–EU summit scheduled for 20 November. The Bernam government hopes to discuss practical steps there to deepen cooperation, without yet initiating the formal procedure for rejoining the European Union.

Понад половина британців
