Strikes on substations and high-voltage grids are limiting the ability to transmit electricity from nuclear power stations to consumers. Rolling blackouts are in place in most regions, whilst emergency restrictions are in force in certain regions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"news-summary-box\"><strong>Briefly about the main points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ukrainian nuclear power stations have reduced their output due to damage to the power grid caused by Russian strikes.<\/li>\n<li>The most difficult situation regarding the electricity supply persists in Kyiv and the Kyiv region.<\/li>\n<li>In most regions, there are scheduled power cuts; in some, there are emergency power cuts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Russian strikes have forced nuclear power stations to cut back on electricity generation<\/h2>\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s nuclear power stations are operating at reduced capacity due to damage to the energy infrastructure caused by intensive Russian shelling. The Ministry of Energy has explained that a return to normal operating levels will take place gradually, once the damaged power grids have been repaired.<\/p>\n<p>The problem lies not only in the generation of electricity, but also in the ability to deliver it to consumers. Nuclear power units generate electricity, which is transmitted via high-voltage power lines and <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/viyna\/vyshhorod-reaktyvnyi-dron-pidstantsiia-svitlo\/\">substations<\/a>. When these facilities are damaged, power companies are forced to restrict the output of their power stations to ensure the equipment operates safely.<\/p>\n<p>The day before, on 3 November, Russian troops attacked a substation that is critical to the operation of the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Station. In total, energy facilities in ten regions of Ukraine came under attack.<\/p>\n<h2>Where is the electricity supply situation most critical?<\/h2>\n<p>According to the Ministry of Energy, the greatest difficulties have arisen in the capital region. Grid restrictions have been introduced in Kyiv and the Kyiv region due to serious damage to power infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency power cuts are also in effect in the Kharkiv region. There, the voltage in the high-voltage grid has dropped as a result of previous attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Some consumers remain without electricity in the Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhzhia, Kirovohrad, Kharkiv and Kherson regions.<\/p>\n<p>In most regions, hourly power cuts are in place for households and power restrictions are in force for industry. Energy workers are carrying out emergency repair work wherever the security situation permits.<\/p>\n<h2>Could Ukrainians be left without electricity for 30 hours at a time?<\/h2>\n<p>Against the backdrop of intensifying Russian attacks, energy experts are warning of the risk of prolonged power cuts in the event of further large-scale damage to the grid.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, the chair of the Utility Consumers\u2019 Association <strong>Oleg Popenko<\/strong> suggests that, should events take an unfavourable turn and further shelling occur in certain regions, <strong>Power cuts may last a day or longer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The actual duration of the restrictions depends on the condition of the grids in a particular region, the amount of available generation and the capacity to transmit electricity between regions.<\/p>\n<h2>Nuclear power accounts for more than half of electricity generation<\/h2>\n<p>Ukraine has four nuclear power stations with a total of 15 power units. Six units <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/world\/magath-and-the-eu-call-for-a-guarantee-of-security\/\">Zaporizhzhya NPP<\/a> are under Russian occupation and do not generate electricity. Nine power units at the Rivne, Khmelnytskyi and South Ukraine power stations remain under Ukrainian control.<\/p>\n<p>According to official figures from Energoatom, in 2025 nuclear power generation produced 53.4 billion kWh of electricity, accounting for more than half of the country\u2019s total electricity production.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike solar and wind power stations, nuclear power stations can provide a stable supply of electricity regardless of weather conditions. However, for nuclear power generation to operate at full capacity, a reliable transmission grid is required, and this remains one of the main targets of Russian
