The agreement also provides for the expansion of existing US military infrastructure and the possibility of deploying elements of the Golden Dome missile defence system. At the same time, Washington has officially recognised Denmark\u2019s sovereignty over the island and the right of the Greenlanders to determine their own future.<\/p>\n<div class=\"news-summary-box\"><strong>Briefly about the main points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Greenlandic Parliament approved a defence agreement with the US and Denmark by 16 votes.<\/li>\n<li>The document authorises the creation of two new US defence zones in the Arctic.<\/li>\n<li>The US will also be able to expand the Pituffick base and develop the Golden Dome system.<\/li>\n<li>The agreement reaffirms Denmark\u2019s sovereignty and the right of the Greenlanders to self-determination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2 data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">The Greenlandic Parliament has backed an expansion of the US military presence<\/h2>\n<p>Sixteen members of the Greenlandic Parliament voted in favour of ratifying the agreement; none voted against it. A further seven lawmakers abstained.<\/p>\n<p>The document was signed on 22 September by the US President <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>, the Prime Minister of Denmark <strong>Mette Frederiksen<\/strong> and the Head of the Government of Greenland <strong>Jens-Frederik Nielsen<\/strong>. It supplements the 1951 defence agreement, which sets out the terms of the US military presence on the island.<\/p>\n<p>The new agreement allows the US to modernise the Pituffik space base, located in north-western Greenland, and to establish two additional defence zones \u2014 near Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig.<\/p>\n<p>The specific details of the new facilities, their equipment and the procedures for their use are yet to be agreed upon by representatives of the three parties. Furthermore, the agreement provides for the possibility of establishing other defence zones subject to separate arrangements.<\/p>\n<h2>Elements of the Golden Dome system could be installed on the island<\/h2>\n<p>One of the key provisions of the agreement is the expansion of US capabilities in the field of missile defence.<\/p>\n<p>The US is securing a legal framework for the deployment in Greenland of the infrastructure required for the development of Golden Dome \u2014 the US missile defence system being promoted by the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>Greenland is of strategic importance for monitoring the Arctic\u2019s airspace and outer space. Its geographical location enables it to monitor the northern routes along which intercontinental ballistic missiles could potentially travel.<\/p>\n<p>The American Pituffick base is already operational on the island, equipped with early-warning systems for missile launches and space surveillance equipment.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the new agreement does not mean that the Golden Dome components are already deployed in Greenland. It refers to the possibility of their deployment in the future.<\/p>\n<h2>The US recognised Denmark\u2019s sovereignty following a dispute over the island<\/h2>\n<p>The agreement was the result of lengthy negotiations between Washington, Copenhagen and Nuuk.<\/p>\n<p>In early 2026, Donald Trump repeatedly stated his desire to establish <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/politics\/ssha-kontrol-grenlandiia-politico\/\">US control over Greenland<\/a>. At the time, the White House did not rule out the use of military force, which prompted a sharp reaction from Denmark and its European NATO allies.<\/p>\n<p>Following diplomatic consultations, the parties agreed on a model for expanding the US military presence without changing the island\u2019s sovereignty.<\/p>\n<p>The document explicitly recognises the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, as well as the right of the people of Greenland to self-determination.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement stipulates that, should Greenland declare independence, it must maintain its defence arrangements with the US and continue to participate in NATO\u2019s collective security system.<\/p>\n<h2>Some MPs opposed the terms of the agreement<\/h2>\n<p>Despite enjoying majority support, the agreement has sparked controversy amongst Greenlandic politicians.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives of the opposition party Naleraq, which campaigns for the island\u2019s independence, have questioned the economic benefits of the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Party leader <strong>Pele Broberg<\/strong> stated that Greenland should seek more favourable terms, particularly in view of its possible future independence.<\/p>\n<p>Minister for Foreign Affairs of Greenland <strong>Mute Eged\u00e9<\/strong>, on the contrary, described the ratification as an important step given the deteriorating international security situation. In his view, peace and stability can no longer be taken for granted.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement has not yet entered into force. It must be ratified by the Danish Parliament, where the first reading is scheduled for 11 November and the vote for 19 November.<\/p>\n<p>Once the parliamentary procedures have been completed, the parties will be able to begin implementing the agreements on the new military facilities.<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1
