NATO's reaction"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"55\">Russian fighter jets invade Estonian airspace.<\/h2>\n<ul data-start=\"68\" data-end=\"723\">\n<li data-start=\"68\" data-end=\"356\">\n<p data-start=\"70\" data-end=\"356\"><strong data-start=\"70\" data-end=\"94\">Three Russian MiG-31s<\/strong> entered Estonian airspace over the Vaindloo Island area without permission and remained there <strong data-start=\"202\" data-end=\"225\">approximately 12 minutes<\/strong>. Flying <strong data-start=\"234\" data-end=\"285\">without flight plans, with transponders switched off<\/strong> and without communication with dispatchers.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"357\" data-end=\"542\">\n<p data-start=\"359\" data-end=\"542\">We took off to intercept <strong data-start=\"383\" data-end=\"402\">Italian F-35<\/strong> from the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltics (<strong data-start=\"445\" data-end=\"468\">Baltic Air Policing<\/strong>) based at Emari Air Base.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"543\" data-end=\"723\">\n<p data-start=\"545\" data-end=\"723\">Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia <strong data-start=\"557\" data-end=\"594\">summoned the Russian Charge d'Affaires<\/strong> and protested; this is already <strong data-start=\"623\" data-end=\"635\">fourth<\/strong> violation of Estonian skies by the Russian Federation in 2025.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"725\" data-end=\"728\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"730\" data-end=\"749\">Details of the incident<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"750\" data-end=\"1142\">The violation occurred <strong data-start=\"768\" data-end=\"799\">on the morning of 19 September 2025<\/strong> near the island of Vainduloo in the Gulf of Finland. According to the Joint Staff of the Estonian Defence Forces, three Russian <strong data-start=\"909\" data-end=\"919\">MiG-31<\/strong> were in the airspace of the country for about <strong data-start=\"969\" data-end=\"982\">12 minutes<\/strong>, without submitting flight plans, without transponders switched on and without two-way radio communication with air traffic control.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1144\" data-end=\"1147\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"1149\" data-end=\"1164\">NATO's response<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1165\" data-end=\"1481\">In response to a violation <strong data-start=\"1189\" data-end=\"1216\">the next F-35 of the Italian Air Force<\/strong> (NATO contingent within the <strong data-start=\"1242\" data-end=\"1265\">Baltic Air Policing<\/strong>) took off to intercept and escort the Russian aircraft. The Alliance called the incident <strong data-start=\"1350\" data-end=\"1362\">defiant<\/strong> and confirming NATO's readiness to respond to threats on its eastern flank.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1483\" data-end=\"1486\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"1488\" data-end=\"1504\">Estonia's steps<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1505\" data-end=\"1885\">Foreign Minister Margus Tskakhkna said that <strong data-start=\"1559\" data-end=\"1603\">MFA summons Russia's charge d'affaires<\/strong> and handed over a note of protest. According to him, <strong data-start=\"1647\" data-end=\"1683\">This is the fourth violation this year<\/strong>, and the current one is \u00abunprecedentedly bold\u00bb due to the number and type of aircraft. Tallinn has also initiated consultations with its allies on further steps within NATO procedures.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1887\" data-end=\"1890\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"1892\" data-end=\"1910\">Why it matters<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1911\" data-end=\"2197\">The Baltic region is one of the most sensitive areas of the Alliance's eastern flank.
