Trams and trolleybuses have not been running since 3 November due to problems with the electricity supply.

The Zhytomyr Tram and Trolleybus Authority has announced that services have been suspended following a large-scale Russian attack on the energy infrastructure.

To ensure passenger transport services, the city authorities have deployed additional municipal buses.

In particular, buses No. 2 and No. 3 are running on the routes normally served by the corresponding trolleybuses. Bus No. 23 is temporarily out of service; instead, passengers can use route No. 23A.

The latter connects the Sloboda-Selets area with the city centre and the regional hospital, running along Ivan Gonta Street, Velyka Berdychivska Street, Shevchenko Street and Universytetska Street.

Other bus routes are operating as normal. The city authorities have not yet announced a date for the resumption of electric transport services.

The Russian attack left more than 180,000 customers in the region without power

The transport restrictions were caused by a large-scale Russian attack on energy facilities in the Zhytomyr region on the night of 3 November.

According to Vitaliy Bunechko, head of the regional military administration, around 130 settlements — totalling more than 180,000 customers — were left without electricity as a result of the strikes.

The damage led to a power shortage and made it difficult to maintain a stable power supply to the city’s infrastructure.

Energy companies have begun emergency repair work, but the instability of the electricity supply continues to affect the operation of public services.

According to «Zhytomyroblenergo», hourly power cuts are in place in the region on 5 November. During the day, from 08:00 to 22:00, restrictions apply simultaneously to four groups of consumers.

For industry, power restriction schedules are in place around the clock. These may be adjusted depending on the situation in the power system.

Street lighting is being restricted, and businesses are being urged to switch off their adverts

The Zhytomyr community continues to implement energy-saving measures for street lighting, introduced due to the difficult situation in the energy sector.

Street lighting is restricted at night where this is technically feasible and does not pose any additional risk to road safety.

The city authorities have also asked business owners to reduce their electricity consumption for lighting advertising structures, signs and building façades.

Businesses are advised to switch their equipment to energy-saving modes and, where possible, to switch it off in the evenings.

Residents are urged not to use several high-power electrical appliances at the same time and to switch off any lights that are not needed.

These measures are intended to reduce the strain on the damaged power grid and the risk of further emergency power cuts.

Problems with the electricity supply have led to disruptions to the water and heating services

The unreliable electricity supply has had an impact on more than just transport.

On 4 November, «Zhytomyrvodokanal» used its backup power supply to keep its equipment running. Some high-rise blocks experienced water supply restrictions as the pumping equipment was being powered by generators.

The company subsequently announced that it had switched back to its main power supply.

At the same time, the city experienced problems with its heating supply. According to the city council, power cuts caused technical faults whilst the heating system was being restored to normal operation.

The operation of traffic lights remains a separate issue. In the event of a power cut, some of them may switch off if they do not have a backup power supply.

Drivers and pedestrians are urged to take care at junctions where traffic lights are not working.

Despite problems with the power supply, on 4 November the city’s schools, nurseries and healthcare facilities remained open. In Zhytomyr, ‘resilience centres’ were also set up for residents who needed assistance due to prolonged power cuts.
