The Nasdaq index fell by around 5 per cent during trading, whilst the S&P 500 dropped by more than 3 per cent. The sharpest declines were seen among semiconductor manufacturers, data centre operators and companies involved in the development of artificial intelligence. The negative trend spread to the cryptocurrency market: Bitcoin fell below $77,000, triggering a wave of forced liquidations of trading positions.

Briefly about the main points

US stock indices fell sharply during trading on 5 November.

The Nasdaq fell by around 5 per cent, whilst the S&P 500 fell by more than 3 per cent.

Chip manufacturers and artificial intelligence infrastructure companies suffered the heaviest losses.

Investors are concerned about new regulatory restrictions following the Democrats’ victory in the US.

Bitcoin fell to $76,100, whilst Ethereum dropped below $2,300.

The Nasdaq fell by around 5 per cent, with chipmakers’ shares plummeting

Trading on Thursday began with a sharp fall in the share prices of technology companies, which quickly spread to the wider stock market.

During the morning session, the index Nasdaq Composite was down by around 5 per cent, the S&P 500 by approximately 3.2 per cent, whilst the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by more than 1,100 points.

For US shares, this marked a sharp reversal following the previous day’s gains. On 4 November, the S&P 500 index rose by around 1.6 per cent, whilst the Dow Jones gained over 3 per cent as the US mid-term congressional elections drew to a close.

The sharpest fall was recorded in the semiconductor sector. AMD shares fell by around 16 per cent during trading, Nvidia — over 8 per cent, whilst CoreWeave, which specialises in cloud computing for artificial intelligence, — nearly 15 per cent.

Micron, Qualcomm, Arm and other companies whose products are used in modern computing systems have also come under pressure.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, which tracks the shares of leading semiconductor manufacturers, fell by more than 7 per cent during trading.

Qualcomm and Arm have heightened investors’ concerns

One of the factors that triggered the sell-off was the financial results and forecasts of two major chip manufacturers — Qualcomm and Arm.

Qualcomm has published its quarterly results, which revealed weaknesses in certain areas of its business, particularly sales of smartphone processors.

The company has faced a decline in demand and a reduction in revenue from its partnership with Apple. Its forecasts for future sales have fallen short of some analysts’ expectations.

Despite earnings that exceeded some market forecasts, investors focused on the risks of a further slowdown in business. Qualcomm’s shares fell by around 9 per cent during morning trading.

Arm, which develops processor architectures for smartphones, servers and artificial intelligence systems, also came under pressure. Its shares fell by around 11 per cent, even though the company reported a rise in quarterly revenue.

The market reaction points to a shift in sentiment: investors are paying ever closer attention not only to technology companies’ current profits, but also to the prospects for growth in their revenues.

Investors have doubts about the return on the multi-billion expenditure on AI

Large-scale events have become a particular cause for concern investment in data centres and artificial intelligence infrastructure.

In recent years, technology companies have invested heavily in the construction of data centres, the purchase of Nvidia graphics processing units, the expansion of electricity grids and the development of cloud platforms.

However, the expected return on these investments remains a matter of debate amongst analysts.

Operators who finance the construction of data centres through borrowing face a particular risk. Delays in bringing new capacity online or a slowdown in demand could make it more difficult to service their debts.

5 November events CoreWeave fell by almost 15 per cent, whilst the energy equipment manufacturer GE Vernova fell by more than 9 per cent.

The negative reaction also affected companies that supply data centres with electricity, servers, cooling systems and other equipment.

The Democrats’ victory has heightened fears of new restrictions

The results of the US mid-term elections, which saw the Democratic Party gain control of both houses of Congress, were a further factor contributing to instability.

Investors are assessing the possibility of tighter state control over the technology sector, the construction of data centres and the financial sector.

Particular attention is drawn to those states where the rapid expansion of computing infrastructure has caused discontent amongst local communities due to the consumption of electricity and water resources, and the potential rise in utility charges.

If the new authorities in certain states introduce additional restrictions or revise the procedures for issuing permits, this could affect the timetables for the implementation of major technology projects.

At the same time, no nationwide ban on the construction of data centres has been announced in the US.

The risks are also mounting for banks. Representatives of the financial sector expect parliamentary scrutiny to intensify following the change in the majority in Congress.

Potential areas for regulation include bank charges, consumer credit, mortgages, customer protection and financial fraud involving artificial intelligence.

The fall also affected the shares of major financial institutions, notably Goldman Sachs.

Bitcoin has fallen below $77,000, with a wave of liquidations sweeping through the crypto market

The sell-off on the stock markets was accompanied by a sharp deterioration in the cryptocurrency market.

Bitcoin, which had previously been trading above $80,000, fell to around $76,100 during the downturn. This represents a fall of more than 5 per cent over a relatively short period of time.

The slump also affected other major cryptocurrencies, including Ethereum.

According to specialist cryptocurrency publications, the volume of forced liquidations of leveraged positions in a single hour was approaching $600 million. A liquidation occurs when an exchange automatically closes a trader’s position due to insufficient collateral to maintain the open trade.

During a sharp fall in prices, such liquidations can further exacerbate market movements, as they trigger new waves of selling. However, the volume of liquidations does not equal the loss in market capitalisation of the entire cryptocurrency market.

The market is awaiting further signals from the Federal Reserve

High interest rates, inflation and the situation on the energy markets are creating further uncertainty.

Investors are keeping a close eye on the decisions of the US Federal Reserve, as the cost of borrowing has a direct impact on the financing of new data centres and other capital-intensive technology projects.

The next key indicator will be the US employment report for October, which is due to be published on 6 November.

Labour market data may influence expectations regarding the Fed’s future monetary policy.

At the time of writing, trading in the US was still underway; therefore, the percentage falls quoted reflect intraday movements rather than the final results of the trading session.
