During the attack, 180 patients fled from the local hospital, including one person with a confirmed case of Ebola and others suspected of being infected. According to local authorities, armed attackers stormed into residential areas, opened fire on civilians and set fire to houses and commercial premises.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives of local communities reported 33 deaths and more than 50 buildings burnt down. Most of the victims found had gunshot wounds; others had been killed with machetes or burnt to death. Later, a local newspaper <strong>Actualite.cd reported that at least 35 people had been killed<\/strong>, including 17 children.<\/p>\n<p>The exact number of casualties has not yet been established. The administrator of the Beni region, Colonel <strong>Charles Omeonga<\/strong>, explained that heavy rain had hampered the military\u2019s operations and their assessment of the aftermath of the attack. Local authorities have blamed the attack on the \u00abAlliance of Democratic Forces\u00bb (ADF), a group linked to the \u00abIslamic State\u00bb.<\/p>\n<h2>180 patients have escaped from the hospital, including those infected with Ebola<\/h2>\n<p>The attack caused a state of emergency in the local healthcare system. Militants set fire to a medical centre, and patients at the nearby Kelekele Hospital were evacuated due to the threat to their lives.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Medical Officer <strong>Christian Kakule Wulember<\/strong> reported that among the 180 people who fled, there was one patient with a laboratory-confirmed <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/science-tech\/vooz-novi-vaktsyny-ebola-oksford-moderna-konho\/\">Ebola<\/a> and five people suspected of having the disease. Among those who were discharged from hospital were also three close contacts at high risk of infection.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors fear that a loss of medical supervision over such patients could lead to new cases of infection. A particular risk is the inability to locate patients and those who have been in contact with them in a timely manner.<\/p>\n<h2>The attack took place in one of the areas affected by the Ebola outbreak<\/h2>\n<p>North Kivu Province remains one of the hardest-hit regions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/show-biz\/affleck-million-eastern-congo-initiative\/\">Congo<\/a>. According to Reuters, it accounts for around half of the new Ebola cases recorded during the current outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>The work of medical staff is made more difficult by years of fighting. The ADF is active in the region \u2014 a group that originated in Uganda and declared its allegiance to the \u00abIslamic State\u00bb in 2019. Its militants have repeatedly been accused of mass killings of civilians, attacks on villages and the destruction of infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Following the attack, Congolese and Ugandan military forces launched an operation to pursue the attackers. Some residents left Kantin-Alua and headed for neighbouring settlements.
