In the Kyiv region, facilities involved in transmitting electricity from nuclear power stations to the central part of the country came under fire.<\/p>\n<p>Such attacks cause problems not only for individual towns and villages. The Rivne and Khmelnytskyi nuclear power stations account for a significant proportion of Ukraine\u2019s electricity generation; however, the stable operation of the transmission grids is essential for delivering the electricity generated to consumers.<\/p>\n<p>The day before, on 6 November, a member of the parliamentary committee on energy <strong>Sergey Nagornyak<\/strong> He reported that both nuclear power stations have already been forced to restrict their electricity output due to damage to the grid. According to him, there are currently obstacles to the transmission of power to Kyiv and the central and eastern regions of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<h2>Damage to substations is exacerbating the power supply situation in Kyiv<\/h2>\n<p>The large-scale attack on 7 November took place against a backdrop of prolonged emergency power cuts in the capital. As a result of previous Russian strikes, Kyiv had been facing disruptions to its electricity, water and heating supplies. The mayor <strong>Vitali Klitschko<\/strong> described the energy supply situation as extremely difficult.<\/p>\n<p>Damage to main substations may limit the ability to transmit electricity to the capital, even when nuclear power stations are generating electricity. As a result, energy suppliers are forced to adjust the grid\u2019s operating modes and, in some cases, to restrict consumption.<\/p>\n<p>The full extent of the damage caused by the overnight strike on 7 November and the timeframe for repairing the equipment are currently being assessed.<\/p>\n<h2>Attacks on substations pose risks to the nuclear power sector<\/h2>\n<p>Back on 3 November, the Minister for Energy <strong>Denis Shmygal<\/strong> reported an attack by three Russian drones on a substation that is critical to the stable operation of the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Station. Ukraine has informed the International Atomic Energy Agency of the incident.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister emphasised that such attacks pose a threat not only to the Ukrainian power grid but also to Europe\u2019s nuclear safety. Energy infrastructure is essential for nuclear power stations, both for transmitting the electricity they generate and for ensuring the reliable operation of safety systems.<\/p>\n<p>Following another large-scale attack, Ukrainian energy companies are continuing to assess the damage and restore the power grids to full operation.
