At 02:36, the last operational 330 kV \u00abFerosplavna-1\u00bb power line, through which the plant received electricity from the Ukrainian power grid, was cut off. An attempt to automatically restore power was unsuccessful. The ZNPP\u2019s critical systems switched to backup diesel generators.<\/p>\n<div class=\"news-summary-box\"><strong>Briefly about the main points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At 02:36 on 8 November, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station lost its last operational power line.<\/li>\n<li>An automatic attempt to restore the station\u2019s external power supply proved unsuccessful.<\/li>\n<li>Critically important safety systems at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station have switched to backup diesel generators.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station has been left without its last power line<\/h2>\n<p>Following the emergency shutdown of the \u00abFerosplavna-1\u00bb line, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station was no longer able to obtain electricity for its own needs from the external grid. Back-up diesel generators are powering the equipment necessary to maintain the safe condition of the nuclear installations.<\/p>\n<p>Main power line with a voltage of <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/viyna\/zaes-terminovyy-remont-liniyi-zhyvlennya\/\">750 kV \u00abDniprovska\u00bb<\/a> It had also previously suffered damage and outages. As a result, Europe\u2019s largest nuclear power station has on several occasions been reliant on a single external source of electricity.<\/p>\n<p>Since Russian troops occupied the station in March 2022, its energy infrastructure has been regularly affected by hostilities. Damage to power lines makes it difficult to maintain a stable power supply and carry out repairs.<\/p>\n<p>The immediate cause of the latest power cut on 8 November has yet to be established.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the risks of a nuclear power station operating on diesel generators?<\/h2>\n<p>All six reactors at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station are in a cold shutdown state and are not generating electricity for consumers. However, even the shut-down power units require a continuous power supply to their cooling systems, control systems and other safety equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Diesel generators are designed to meet these needs in the event of an emergency. Their operation depends on the technical condition of the equipment, fuel stocks and the availability of timely maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>Every new power cut increases the strain on backup systems. Energoatom had previously warned that frequent start-ups of diesel generators accelerate equipment wear and tear, whilst a prolonged absence of external power supply poses additional risks to nuclear safety.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the switch to emergency power supply does not in itself indicate a reactor accident or a release of radioactive substances.<\/p>\n<h2>The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station is experiencing a record number of power cuts<\/h2>\n<p>Throughout 2026, the situation regarding the electricity supply <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/main-news\/zaes-bez-zovnishnoho-zhyvlennia\/\">ZAES<\/a> has deteriorated significantly. According to preliminary reports from Energoatom, the plant experienced 14 complete power cuts in the first eight months of the year alone.<\/p>\n<p>The International Atomic Energy Agency has repeatedly emphasised the need for a stable external power supply to ensure the safety of all six reactors and the spent nuclear fuel storage pools.<\/p>\n<p>During the previous prolonged power cut in August and September, the electricity supply was restored after Ukrainian power engineers repaired the damaged line under a local ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>Following a further power cut on 8 November, the station is once again relying on backup power sources. At the time of reporting this incident, there is no confirmed information regarding the restoration of the external power
