According to local authorities, the bridge\u2019s road surface and two construction cranes were damaged. Traffic on the section of the R-280 \u00abNovorossiya\u00bb federal highway was subsequently closed. The road connects Rostov-on-Don with the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. Yuri Slyusar, Governor of the Rostov Region, reported on the consequences of the attack. Damage was reported at the 97th kilometre of the R-280 federal highway, where the road crosses the Mius River.<\/p>\n<p>A Russian official claims that <strong>The bridge\u2019s road surface has been damaged by falling debris from a drone<\/strong>. In addition, some construction machinery was damaged \u2014 two crawler cranes that were near the crossing.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, the local authorities reported that two-way traffic had been organised, with vehicles taking turns to cross the bridge in both directions. However, Slyusar later clarified that traffic on the damaged section of the R-280 road leading to the bridge had been completely closed.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency services are at the scene. Drivers have been urged to use alternative routes. According to preliminary information from the Russian side, there are no casualties.<\/p>\n<h2>Why the R-280 road is important for links with the occupied territories<\/h2>\n<p>The R-280 \u00abNovorossiya\u00bb federal highway runs from Rostov-on-Don via Mariupol and Melitopol towards Simferopol. It forms part of the land transport route that Russia uses to connect with the occupied territories in southern Ukraine and Crimea.<\/p>\n<p>The road forms part of the so-called Azov Transport Ring, the development of which the Russian authorities have identified as one of their transport infrastructure priorities.<\/p>\n<p>The bridge over the Mius River in the Neklinivsky District is currently undergoing reconstruction. The works, which began in 2025, involve widening the bridge to four lanes. The Russian side had planned to complete the reconstruction in 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Damage to this bridge and the closure of the approach section of the road may disrupt traffic on the route leading to the occupied part of Donetsk Oblast. However, there is currently no confirmed information regarding the duration of the restrictions or the extent of the damage to the bridge\u2019s load-bearing structures.<\/p>\n<h2>The Russian authorities have announced the consequences of the attack<\/h2>\n<p>The Governor of the Rostov Region reported that, following the morning attack, the threat of drone strikes in the region remained. Residents were urged to observe safety measures and to avoid open areas.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian side attributes the damage to the bridge to debris from a downed drone. There is currently no independent confirmation of the cause of the damage.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of publication, the Ukrainian military command had not claimed responsibility for the attack on the
