Sometimes the glass simply mists up in the morning, whilst in other cases water runs down onto the windowsill, dampening the window frames and causing mould to form. This is most often caused by a combination of high humidity, insufficient ventilation and the cold surface of the glass. However, sometimes the problem is linked to incorrect installation or damage to the double-glazed unit. Let’s find out why windows «cry» in winter, how to identify the real cause and what will help get rid of condensation without costly repairs.

Briefly about the main points

Condensation occurs when moist air comes into contact with a cold glass surface.

The most common causes are high humidity, poor ventilation and inadequate heating.

To monitor humidity, it is advisable to use a household hygrometer.

Regular ventilation and a properly functioning extractor fan help to reduce window misting.

Moisture between the panes may indicate a breach in the double-glazed unit’s seal.

Why do plastic windows fog up in winter?

Condensation forms due to the temperature difference between the air in the room and the surface of the window pane. Warm air contains water vapour, which turns into tiny droplets of water when it comes into contact with a cold surface. The higher the humidity in the flat and the lower the temperature of the glass, the greater the likelihood of condensation.

Extra moisture is generated by everyday activities: cooking, showering, drying laundry and even people breathing. In rooms with airtight plastic windows, water vapour can build up more quickly if the ventilation does not provide sufficient air exchange.

The problem becomes particularly noticeable at night, when the temperature outside drops and the heating is less effective. That is why water droplets often appear on the windows in the morning, even though the windows remain dry during the day.

What level of humidity in a flat is considered normal?

For most residential premises, a relative humidity of 30–50 per cent is a practical guideline. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends maintaining it within this range wherever possible and avoiding prolonged periods where it exceeds 60 per cent.

In severe frosts, even the level of humidity that is normal for a flat can cause condensation to form on windows that are not sufficiently insulated. It is therefore important to take into account not only the readings on the hygrometer, but also the air temperature and the condition of the double-glazed windows.

The simplest way to check the situation is to set up a household hygrometer. If the humidity consistently exceeds the recommended level, you should check that the ventilation is working properly, air the rooms more often and reduce the number of sources of water vapour.

How to get rid of condensation on plastic windows

First and foremost, it is essential to ensure a regular supply of fresh air. In winter, it is better to open the windows wide several times a day for about 5–10 minutes than to keep them in ‘micro-ventilation’ mode all the time without proper air exchange. Short, intensive ventilation helps to remove damp air without cooling the walls and furniture excessively.

It is equally important to check the ventilation in the bathroom and kitchen. When cooking, it is advisable to use an extractor fan that vents air outside, and after a shower, leave the ventilation running until the humidity has decreased.

If a radiator is situated beneath a window, it should not be blocked by thick curtains, furniture or wide decorative panelling. Warm air should be able to rise freely along the window pane, heating its surface. An excessively wide window sill can also disrupt air circulation.

In flats with consistently high humidity, a domestic dehumidifier can provide an additional solution. It is particularly useful in rooms where laundry is regularly dried or where it is not possible to ensure adequate ventilation.

Why does water collect at the bottom of the window and on the windowsill?

The bottom part of a double-glazed unit often cools down more than its central section. This is due to the design features, in particular heat transfer through the spacer frame between the panes. Consequently, the first drops of condensation often appear precisely along the lower edge of the glass.

If water regularly runs down onto the window sill, you should check the seals, the condition of the slopes and the installation joints. Defects in the thermal insulation around the window unit can create localised cold spots where moisture condenses more readily.

Particular attention should be paid to where the moisture is located. If droplets form on the inside surface of the glass, the cause is usually sought in the room’s microclimate. If, however, condensation has appeared between the panes, this may indicate that the double-glazed unit has lost its airtight seal. Simply airing the room will not resolve this problem — it requires inspection by a specialist and, in some cases, replacement of the double-glazed unit.

Why is condensation dangerous, and how can you prevent mould from forming?

Constant dampness around windows creates favourable conditions for mould to grow. Mould most often appears on silicone joints, rubber seals, window sills and in corners, where air circulation is poorest.

According to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), spending time in damp, mouldy rooms can cause eye and skin irritation, a blocked nose and breathing difficulties, particularly in people with asthma or allergies.

If dark patches have already appeared on the slopes, it is not enough simply to wipe them with a dry cloth. Small patches on hard surfaces can be cleaned with water and washing-up liquid and then dried thoroughly. At the same time, it is essential to address the cause of the damp, otherwise the mould will return. If porous materials are affected or the area affected by mould is extensive, professional cleaning or replacement of the damaged finish may be required.

Ordinary water droplets on the glass after a cold night do not necessarily indicate a fault with the window. However, constant condensation, damp window sills, an unpleasant odour and dark stains around the frame indicate a problem that needs to be rectified before the finish is damaged and mould spreads.

З настанням холодів
