After that, Brussels will propose a transition to <strong data-start=\"700\" data-end=\"748\">national systems of residence and integration<\/strong> in each country.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"769\" data-end=\"790\">Why it matters<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"791\" data-end=\"1088\">\n<li data-start=\"791\" data-end=\"880\">\n<p data-start=\"793\" data-end=\"880\">Over <strong data-start=\"799\" data-end=\"825\">4.2 million Ukrainians<\/strong> currently enjoy temporary protection status in the EU.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"881\" data-end=\"985\">\n<p data-start=\"883\" data-end=\"985\">Countries are facing increasing financial pressures, including on social systems and labour markets.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"986\" data-end=\"1088\">\n<p data-start=\"988\" data-end=\"1088\">European governments are stressing that it is time to move from crisis solutions to long-term integration.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"1090\" data-end=\"1106\">EU position<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1107\" data-end=\"1280\">Brussels emphasises that it is not about deporting or forcibly returning Ukrainians, but about ending the temporary scheme and transferring people to a more stable legal framework.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1282\" data-end=\"1468\">\n<p data-start=\"1284\" data-end=\"1468\">\u00abWe have to create conditions under which Ukrainians either integrate into EU societies or can safely return home after the war,\u00bb the European Commission representative said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 data-start=\"1470\" data-end=\"1488\">What's next<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1489\" data-end=\"1914\">\n<li data-start=\"1489\" data-end=\"1611\">\n<p data-start=\"1491\" data-end=\"1611\">Each member state will determine its own integration mechanisms, ranging from residence permits to long-term visas.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1612\" data-end=\"1740\">\n<p data-start=\"1614\" data-end=\"1740\">Ukrainians who remain in the EU will have to apply for new documents and prove the grounds for legalisation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1741\" data-end=\"1914\">\n<p data-start=\"1743\" data-end=\"1914\">European experts predict that for a significant number of Ukrainian citizens, this will mean either obtaining a long-term status or returning to their homeland after the war.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"1916\" data-end=\"1930\">Context.<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1931\" data-end=\"2095\">The temporary protection mechanism was introduced in March 2022.
