Belgian Prime Minister blocks EU plan for Russian assets Politico<\/em><\/h2>\n

Prime Minister of Belgium Bart de Weever<\/strong> blocked the EU-agreed plan to use the 140 billion euros of Russian assets<\/strong> in favour of Ukraine. This was reported by the Politico<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Why Belgium is against<\/h2>\n

According to the publication, de Weever strongly opposed the initiative because:<\/p>\n

    fears lawsuits from russia<\/strong>, The court has also issued a decision that could force Belgium to return the funds;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    does not believe in the legal reliability of the scheme;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    believes that such a move could jeopardise future peace talks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Belgium is one of the key countries where a significant portion of Russia's frozen reserves is stored, in particular in the Euroclear system.<\/p>\n

    What Belgium offers<\/h2>\n

    Instead of using Russian assets, de Weever proposed an alternative option:<\/p>\n

      issue \u20ac45 billion of EU common debt<\/strong>,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      without touching Russian reserves.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      This would allow us to finance Ukrainian needs without risking legal consequences.<\/p>\n

      Context.<\/h2>\n

      The EU has already approved the referral mechanism income from frozen assets<\/strong> Ukraine, but the issue of the complete withdrawal of Russia's reserves remains politically and legally the most difficult.<\/p>\n
