The EU will completely abandon Russian gas by 30 September 2027<\/h2>\n

European Council and European Parliament agree on final rules obliging EU member states to to completely stop importing Russian natural gas by 30 September 2027<\/strong>. This is stated in the official statement of the European Council.<\/p>\n

The document provides for a legally binding schedule for reducing imports and gradually withdrawing all contracts related to Russian gas from circulation.<\/p>\n

Intermediate stages: what will be banned and when<\/h2>\n

The EU has approved three key milestones:<\/p>\n

1. By June 2026<\/strong><\/h3>\n
    \n
  • \n

    complete cessation spot purchases<\/strong> of Russian gas;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    a ban on short-term procurement schemes through intermediaries.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    2. By 1 January 2027<\/strong><\/h3>\n
      \n
    • \n

      elimination of all long-term contracts for the supply of LNG<\/strong> (liquefied natural gas) from Russia;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      a ban on signing new LNG contracts with Russian companies.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      3. Until 30 September 2027<\/strong><\/h3>\n
        \n
      • \n

        complete cessation of supplies pipeline gas<\/strong> from the territory of the Russian Federation, including transit routes;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        technical disconnection of the infrastructure from Russian gas sources.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Why the EU is moving to a full phase-out<\/h2>\n

        In a statement, the European Council noted that this decision is critical for:<\/p>\n

          Europe's energy independence<\/strong>,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

          Reducing strategic vulnerability<\/strong>,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        • \n

          The EU has already reduced the share of Russian gas from more than 40% in 2021 to less than 10% in 2025, mainly due to increased LNG imports from the US, Qatar and Norway, as well as the development of green energy.<\/p>\n
