US-Denmark Greenland deal does not transfer sovereignty<\/h2>\n

Agreement between the United States and Denmark on Greenland does not provide for the transfer of sovereignty over the island to the United States<\/strong>. This is reported by the Axios<\/strong><\/em> citing sources familiar with the details of the negotiations.<\/p>\n

According to the publication, the issue is full transfer of control or purchase of Greenland<\/strong> during the meeting officially was not violated<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What the new agreement provides for<\/h3>\n

The plan is based on modernisation of the 1951 agreement<\/strong> between the US and Denmark and provides for a significant expansion of security cooperation.<\/p>\n

In particular, the agreement gives the United States the right to:<\/p>\n

    Expand military presence<\/strong> on the island;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    create new ones \u00abdefence zones\u00bb<\/strong> if necessary.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    A separate clause provides for deployment of elements of the US new generation missile defence system in Greenland<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    The Arctic and the geopolitical context<\/h3>\n

    The document also contains provisions on:<\/p>\n

      strengthening security in the Arctic region<\/strong>;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      countermeasures \u00abmalicious influence\u00bb of Russia and China<\/strong>;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      extension cooperation in the extraction of critical minerals<\/strong>, with which Greenland is rich.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Greenland is seen by the United States as strategically important region<\/strong> due to its geographical location, proximity to the Arctic and potential mineral reserves.
