EU ambassadors convene extraordinary meeting to discuss outcome of Geneva talks
Ambassadors of the European Union will gather this evening at the extraordinary meeting, to discuss the results of the peace talks in Geneva. This was reported by Public with reference to diplomatic sources.
According to the newspaper, the meeting was convened due to the need to quickly develop a common EU position on the changes that the US plans to make to its «peace proposals» after negotiations with its allies.
Context.
Previously, the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Washington is working on an updated version of the document and already has a «very good working version». European capitals, for their part, insist on a number of key amendments, including:
preventing Ukraine's retreat from the unoccupied territories;
maintaining EU control over frozen Russian assets and sanctions policy;
guarantees that Ukraine will maintain a powerful Armed Forces.
Today's meeting is intended to assess whether the updated document meets the EU's interests and whether the Union is ready to support the American version.
