Zakarpattia region detains cash collectors who were transporting fugitives in an armoured car

In Zakarpattia, law enforcement officers exposed a crew of a cash collection vehicle engaged in the illegal smuggling of men of military age across the state border. This was reported by the regional prosecutor's office.

The collectors used an armoured car with flashing lights, which allowed them to move freely on the roads and avoid arousing suspicion.

How the scheme worked

  • According to the investigation, the conscripts were transported from Lviv to Berehove, hiding them in a specially equipped capsule inside an armoured vehicle.
  • The cost of the «route» was about $1500, and a «package» delivered directly to the border cost $15 000.
  • The detention took place near the state border - just as another fugitive was paying for the service and preparing to go to the forest to cross into Hungary on foot.

According to the prosecutor's office, money, communications equipment and special equipment were seized from the detainees.

Context.

In recent months, a number of attempts to illegally travel abroad by men have been recorded in Zakarpattia. Popular schemes include smuggling through the «green» zone, forged documents, the use of company cars and disguise as special transport.
