Ukraine detains former Energoatom vice-president and ex-deputy energy minister

Law enforcement officers detained the former vice-president of the state enterprise Energoatom and the former deputy minister of energy of Ukraine. This was announced by the Prosecutor General Kravchenko, and noted that the suspect is already being served with a notice of suspicion.

According to the investigation, the official is suspected of misappropriation of another's property by abuse of office in particularly large sizes.

Investigators found that the 2022 The official first concluded an insurance contract for the amount of UAH 105.642 million. In just over a year 12 days the contract value was increased to UAH 130.925 million by signing an additional agreement.

Law enforcement officials say there were no grounds for such a sharp increase, and the contract itself contained risks that could lead to the loss of public funds.

The Russian trail

While checking the ownership structure of the insurance company with which the contract was concluded, investigators found chain of controlled companies, that leads to the Russian financial sector.

According to the prosecutor, these data became one of the key grounds for the detention and further preparation of the suspicion.

Law enforcement agencies have recently increased their focus on corruption risks in the energy sector. Earlier, a number of top officials of energy companies were the focus of investigations related to public procurement and financial transactions.

The case was referred to the anti-corruption authorities for further procedural actions.
