Zelenskyy to appoint head of military administration in Odesa to improve city's defence

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that today the head of the Security Service of Ukraine Vasyl Malyuk, during which they discussed measures to counteract intelligence networks and strengthen the defence of the state. The President thanked the SBU «for its strong work in defence of Ukraine», noting the service's contribution to identifying and neutralising threats.

Odesa needs more protection - military administration format

Zelenskyy also touched upon the situation in the frontline communities and in the south of the country, in particular in Odesa. According to him, the city deserves greater protection and wider support, and this can be realised by creating or strengthening the format of military administration.

«Too many security issues in Odesa have remained unanswered for too long. All effective decisions will be made,» the President stressed. He also promised to to appoint the head of the military administration next week.

Why is this done and what are the consequences?

The transition to military administration usually makes it possible:

• speed up the coordination of defence and rescue measures;

• coordinate the work of law enforcement agencies and local authorities;

• promptly resolve issues of logistics, evacuation and life support.

Such a move could also mean tighter control over access to critical infrastructure and an increased presence of security forces, measures aimed at reducing the risk of sabotage and terrorist attacks in the port region.
