President says those who built schemes at Energoatom should be punished

Kyiv. In the evening, the president Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on government officials and anti-corruption agencies to take decisive action: «Any successful action against corruption is needed,» he said. According to him, everyone who participated in the Energoatom schemes should be held legally accountable, and government officials should work together with the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU).

Zelenskyy stressed that corruption in the energy sector harms national interests and threatens Ukraine's energy security. He stressed that the government should not just declare that it is fighting corruption, but demonstrate concrete results - «successful actions» - against those who have gained dishonestly.

The President noted that NABU and the government must act «synchronously and effectively» to ensure that no «systemic holes» remain. He appealed to the heads of ministries and relevant agencies to ensure transparency and accountability in contracting, procurement and state property management.

Context.

In recent days, anti-corruption authorities have been actively publicising information about large-scale operations in the energy sector, including searches and suspects among civil servants and energy company executives.

In this way, Zelenskyy signals a course of «tough» anti-corruption action in a key sector and a willingness to intervene at the highest level.

What's next?

  • The government is expected to submit or intensify legislative initiatives to strengthen anti-corruption controls in the near future.

  • The next step is to review key contracts at Energoatom, analyse procurement schemes and involve international audit companies.

  • Government officials who do not cooperate with the NABU may find themselves under close scrutiny by the president and law enforcement.
