German general warns that Russia could launch a limited attack on NATO territory at any time

Head of the German Joint Operations Command, Vice Admiral Alexander Zolfrank, said in an interview with Reuters that Russia has the technical capability «at any time» to launch limited military strike on NATO territory.
According to him, it will not be a large-scale war - we are talking about a small, regionally limited attack, Moscow's large forces are now involved in Ukraine.

Potential and challenges

Zolfrank pointed out that:

  • Russia's fighter jets, missile forces and navy (outside the Black Sea) still have significant potential.

  • moscow plans to increase the number of ground troops to 1.5 million people and keeps large stockpiles of tanks - making the attack quite «real».

  • If nothing changes, a major attack on NATO could take place by 2029.

Significance for Europe

Zolfranc's assessment underlines that Europe's security is not just a matter of Ukraine - its territory and NATO allies are also at risk.
Allies must strengthen deterrence, improve readiness and invest in defence systems to ensure that an attack tomorrow does not come as a surprise.
