The NATO Secretary General said that the Alliance should provide €1 billion in monthly funding for US arms purchases for Ukraine.

NATO should guarantee Ukraine at least €1 billion a month for the purchase of US weapons

NATO Secretary General Mark Rütte stated that the Alliance should ensure minimum €1 billion per month over the next year to purchase US weapons for Ukraine. He said this at a briefing, commenting on the state of funding for Kyiv's defence support.

«We have to make sure that over the next year we have at least 1 billion a month to buy weapons for Ukraine from the US,» Rutte said.

€4bn raised and optimism for December

According to the Secretary General, NATO member states have already accumulated €4 billion, The Bank will use the funds as part of a long-term support package.

Rutte also expressed confidence that December financial plan will be met, and Allies will maintain the required pace of contributions.

Why we need funding stability

Rutte stressed that it is critical for Ukraine's defence to have estimated annual funding, rather than situational packages, because:

  • planning for the procurement of US weapons requires long-term contracts;

  • Ukrainian forces should receive weapons without delay;

  • A stable budget allows the US to increase production of ammunition and equipment.

Context.

After Washington changed its approach, it was NATO countries that took on the main financial burden of purchasing weapons for Ukraine. The United States focuses on production and deliveries, while European partners pay for contracts.

The Euro-Atlantic powers are already discussing a multi-year fund model that would avoid political delays in the future.
