All external power supply to the Chernobyl NPP is interrupted

The entire external power supply system of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is currently completely interrupted. This was announced by the Director General of IAEA Raphael Grossi.

According to him, the loss of external power means that the facility is forced to rely solely on backup power sources to maintain safe operation.

Event details

The IAEA emphasises that external power supply is critical to ensuring nuclear and radiation safety, even at a non-operational NPP, such as the Chornobyl plant.

A power outage increases the load on emergency systems and diesel generators, which have a limited service life and require constant maintenance.

Context.

The Chornobyl NPP has repeatedly lost external power supply since the start of the full-scale war due to hostilities, shelling and damage to the energy infrastructure.

The IAEA regularly warns that such incidents pose additional risks to nuclear safety and require stable and guaranteed access to electricity regardless of the military situation.

Rafael Grossi has previously stressed that nuclear safety in Ukraine remains fragile, and any interruption of power supply at nuclear facilities is unacceptable from the point of view of international security.
