Ukraine, US and Russia talks in Abu Dhabi on 4-5 February: what happened, what are the consequences and is peace possible

A new round of trilateral talks has been completed

In the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi, On 4 February 2026, a new round of peace talks was held between the Ukraine, the United States of America and Russia with the participation of three delegations. The negotiations lasted several hours, after which the parties announced their conclusion on the same day, and the continuation is scheduled for 5 February.

This series of talks is a continuation of the trilateral format that began in January 2026. These diplomatic efforts are aimed at finding ways to end the war, which has been going on for more than four years since Russia's full-scale invasion.

Positions of the parties and main topics of negotiations

The Ukrainian delegation at this session tried to better understand the positions of the Russian Federation and the United States on key topics, including the security and military aspects of the conflict," said the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Georgy Tikhiy. Ukraine also wants to hear how ready Moscow is to compromise.

In turn, Russian representatives have traditionally insisted on certain political conditions to stop the war, while Washington has been mediating, stressing the importance of dialogue but emphasising the principles of Ukraine's sovereignty.

Negotiations take place against the backdrop of hostilities

This round of peace talks is not separated from the realities of the war: almost in parallel with diplomatic actions, Russia has taken several massive attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure, The disruption, in particular to the energy sector, caused serious damage and left some of the population without heat in winter.

Also during the negotiations, the following were recorded Strikes on civilian areas of Donetsk region, where civilians were killed and injured as a result of shelling.

These facts underscore that the diplomatic process is taking place simultaneously with the active phase of hostilities - complicating any attempts to end the war quickly.

Reaction of international leaders

During this round, pressure from political actors is also increasing: representatives of NATO and other Western countries reiterate that the peace process should be based on clear security guarantees for Ukraine and the implementation of international law.

Despite the diplomatic efforts, analysts from different countries note that the chances of achieving a comprehensive peace quickly remain low, as the parties are far from compromising on key issues, including the status of the temporarily occupied territories.

What's next: results and prospects

The new round of talks in Abu Dhabi indicates a certain intensification of the diplomatic process, but the available data suggests that:

  • The negotiations have not yet resulted in any final arrangements or agreements;

  • Military activity at the front continues;

  • Key differences between Kyiv and Moscow remain deep;

  • The diplomatic dialogue will continue on 5 February and in the following weeks.

Among the main expectations remains the question of whether the parties will be able to agree on a temporary ceasefire or demilitarised security guarantees, which have become one of the main topics of the peace process in the international arena.
