Mertz: There are few chances for a quick end to the war through negotiations

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that a quick end to the war in Ukraine through negotiations seems unlikely. He said this while commenting on the prospects for a diplomatic settlement.

Assessment of the situation

According to the German Chancellor, the current dynamics of the fighting and the positions of the parties do not indicate a close compromise.

«In my opinion, this war will only end when one of the two sides is exhausted, either militarily or economically,» Mertz explained.

What this means for Europe

This assessment reflects a growing understanding among European policymakers that war can have long-term nature and will demand it:

  • long-term military support for Ukraine;

  • the resilience of European economies to protracted conflict;

  • Increased sanctions and political pressure on Russia.

Context.

Discussions about possible negotiations continue in parallel with the fighting and diplomatic contacts between international partners.

At the same time, many Western leaders emphasise that the conditions for peace must guarantee security of Ukraine and stability in Europe, not just a temporary ceasefire.
