Israeli Foreign Minister sharply responds to Russian ambassador

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel Gideon Saar said that he could hardly contain his laughter during the speech of the Russian ambassador, who spoke about international law, the occupation of territories and the peaceful settlement of conflicts.

What the Israeli diplomat said

According to the Israeli Foreign Minister, the Russian representative's speech looked contradictory given Russia's own actions in the international arena.

«It was funny to hear the representative of the Russian Federation talk about law and international law, about occupation, annexation of territories and peaceful resolution of conflicts. I could hardly stop myself from laughing out loud during his speech,» the minister said.

Diplomatic context

Such harsh statements indicate that:

  • Tensions between Israel and Russia;

  • increased international criticism of Moscow's actions;

  • the growing role of diplomatic rhetoric amid global conflicts.

Wider global response

Russia regularly claims to respect international law in global conflicts, but its full-scale war against Ukraine has been the subject of harsh criticism from many states.

The Israeli minister's statement fits in with the general trend of harsher public assessments of Russia's actions in the international arena.
