From now on, Ukrainian men aged 18 to 60 who arrive in Norway will not receive temporary protection automatically. Their applications will be considered individually. The decision applies only to newly arrived citizens.
What is changing
The Norwegian government has decided to change its approach to granting temporary protection to men from Ukraine of military age. From now on, automatic temporary protection will not be granted to men aged 18 to 60 who have just arrived in the country.
Applications from this category of persons will be considered individually. The decision does not affect other Ukrainian citizens for whom the temporary protection mechanism remains in force.
Reasons for the decision
The Norwegian authorities explain the changes by the need for a more thorough assessment of each case. The government seeks to strengthen control over migration processes.
The changes apply only to newly arrived men of conscription age. For other groups of Ukrainian citizens, the rules remain unchanged.
Context.
After the outbreak of full-scale war, EU countries, as well as Norway, introduced a mechanism of temporary protection for Ukrainians. This status allows for the right to reside, work and receive social support.
Recently, some states have begun to reconsider their approaches to providing temporary protection, especially for men of military age.
