Orban says Ukrainian army poses a «threat» and refuses to fund the Armed Forces
The head of the Hungarian government said that one of the Ukrainian army commanders allegedly allows for a military invasion of Hungary. Against this background Orban expressed concern about the growing military potential of Ukraine near the Hungarian border.
According to him, the creation and maintenance of a large Ukrainian army at European expense is contrary to Hungary's security interests. The politician stressed that he sees a risk in the fact that the reinforced Ukrainian Armed Forces may remain on the eastern borders of his country.
Budapest's position on supporting Ukraine
Orban stressed that these considerations are one of the reasons why Hungary does not participate in financing the Ukrainian army. This position is in line with Budapest's previous policy, which has repeatedly opposed certain EU decisions on military aid to Kyiv.
At the same time, most European Union states continue to support Ukraine financially and militarily, viewing it as a key element of European security.
Context of relations between Ukraine and Hungary
Relations between Kyiv and Budapest remain tense due to different approaches to Russia's war against Ukraine, sanctions policy and security issues in the region.
Experts note that such statements by the Hungarian leadership are often political in nature and are linked to domestic and European discussions on further support for Ukraine.
Conclusion.
Orban's statement once again underscores the divisions within the EU over approaches to the war and assistance to Ukraine. Despite Budapest's position, most European partners continue to see support for Kyiv as a key condition for stability on the continent.
