Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada and Chairman of the Servant of the People party« Alexander Kornienko said that Ukraine is preparing to organise voting for some 8 million citizens abroad. This will pose a major organisational challenge, especially in countries with large numbers of Ukrainians, such as Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic.
Organising elections abroad
According to Oleksandr Korniienko, if only 150-200 thousand Ukrainians voted abroad before the war, now it is necessary to ensure that 8 million citizens participate in the elections. This will require scaling up the electoral infrastructure tenfold. The greatest difficulties are expected in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic, where most Ukrainians live.
Key challenges: legislation and infrastructure
Kornienko named the main difficulties as different electoral laws in the host countries, the need to create infrastructure for voting and organising the process on a large scale. At the same time, some countries, such as Ireland, have already expressed their willingness to help, even financially, in organising elections for Ukrainians.
Cooperation with partner countries
The Ukrainian authorities are holding talks with the governments of the countries where the largest Ukrainian communities are located to simplify procedures and ensure transparency of the electoral process. The authorities urge Ukrainians abroad to follow official information on the organisation of voting in their country of residence.
