Brussels sets conditions for Budapest

The European Union has put forward a list of 27 requirements for the new Hungarian prime minister to fulfil in order to unlock €35 billion in funding. According to The Financial Times, The main points include unblocking a €90bn loan to Ukraine and lifting the veto on sanctions against Moscow.

In addition to financial support for Ukraine, the EU is demanding that Budapest conduct anti-corruption checks and review decisions made during Viktor Orban's premiership that violate EU rules. These steps are seen as necessary to restore trust in the Hungarian government.

Anti-corruption audits and legislative review

The European Commission insists on conducting anti-corruption checks in Hungarian government agencies. Particular attention is paid to decisions made by the previous government, which, in Brussels' view, do not meet European standards.

Fulfilling these requirements is seen as a key factor for recovery EU funding. EU representatives have explicitly stated that the new government needs to act quickly and decisively.

Migration legislation and fines

A separate item on the list of requirements is the change in migration legislation. The European Court of Justice has recognised the current Hungarian regulations as violating EU rules. As a result, Hungary pays a daily fine of €1 million, and the total amount has almost reached €900 million.

These funds are deducted from Hungary's share of the EU budget, which puts additional pressure on the new government. The European Commission expects negotiations to begin soon to resolve this issue.

EU expectations and next steps

The European Union has openly stated that it is putting pressure on the new Hungarian government. Brussels expects the conditions to be met promptly and a constructive dialogue to be launched to resolve all disputes.

As previously reported, similar requirements have already been nominated to the government Viktor Orban, However, progress has been limited. The fate of Hungary's funding remains in doubt until the new conditions are met.
